Turbo Day
Turns out - a shop vac with the micro-attachments works great for cleaning the loose grit and garbage from around the valve covers before you pull them. Works great for sucking up the fuel and oil that dribble into the cyl when you pop the injectors out as well. I'll admit that the pass side is going to be more of a pita than I'd anticipated, but even knowing that in advance wouldn't have stopped me from tackling this project. I'd have just switched from coffee to beer sooner. Have to pick the wife up from work in a bit, so that'll eat into my work time... but I'll probably just stay up late tonight to finish it all out. Kindof excited... feels like Christmas... except I don't know that Santa's sleigh is going to make this much torque. :-)
Oh yeah, yes... that's the $5 hand pump I used to evac the HPOP... into an empty bottle of canola oil. It's what I happened to have on hand at the time. I'd have used the shop vac for that too, but I was curious to see how dirty the oil would be.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Injectors are in, snapped a couple new pics... but nothing exciting. All I left for this morning was torquing the drivers side valve cover. I was thinking I'd get the fuel filter this morning before having a go at the turbo. Seems like everything that's left can all pretty much be done at the same time... but should make for better pics too. Busy day. :-)
Edit: It's amazing how much longer projects take when you have family / keep the wife happy stuff to take care of in between. That's certainly not a complaint, but it probably wouldn't hurt to start taking these things into account when budgeting time for projects.
Your list of mods is similar to mine. You will be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I love the added power that comes with these mods. I will definitely be a "whole 'nother animal" for sure.
It works all the time on my wife...

Question, why did you drain the oil from the HPOP? Am I missing something here?
How do your up-pipes look? Are the bolts pretty rusted to the manifold?
A little trick to get to the passenger side, take out the plastic wheel well, then you can get to it from over the wheel (or take the wheel off too). I'm not one to tear apart more than I have to, but my dad took it off and it made a big difference. I'm glad he did because I had to cut the bolt in two, then heat the manifold and use an air chisel to get the bolt out.
Looks awesome! Right now working on it seems hard, and like you said, certain parts (passenger side valve cover, etc) can be a PITA. But it's funny once you have it all done and running you think to yourself, "that wasn't all that hard!"
I didn't 'drain' the hpop... instead I used a pump with a length of plastic tubing to evacuate just under a qt of oil.
As for all my whining... I might complain a little bit but I'm actually having a great time working on this. The little things that make it challenging are why most people aren't willing to dive into something like this themselves... and why it actually feels like you've accomplished something that first time you crank it and hear it rumble to life.
On a side note... I was complaining (not whining like a little gir... just complaining in a manly fashion) to clay about how crappy the lighting is in my garage. I'd been getting by using the giant flashlight from my Ridgit rechargeable tool set - which works amazingly well. I get half a day out of a battery... but it's still not quite as convenient as having... you know... lights. I have one big florescent light on the ceiling that is in exactly the wrong spot for working on the truck. (The hood shades the engine bay.) After complaining about having been too cheap to purchase a $15 drop light like any sane person would have done... it occurred to me (after working all day yesterday and having the same problem putting my gauges in a month or so ago) that it would only take about 15 min to just move the light. (I know... brilliance doesn't happen in an instant. For some of us... it may take even longer.... lol) At any rate... after 15 min of drilling, wiring and wondering why I wasn't bright enough to think of this sooner... I can see.

For those of you who don't already know me... my garage is tiny, so my truck doesn't actually fit... or I'd pull it in with the engine bay facing the door... and all that free light. (I had a smaller, less manly vehicle when I moved in here.) I end up having to pull in so that the tailgate and bumper stick out so that it's less obnoxious for the neighbors if I have to pull the door down 1/2 way overnight. Gotta work with what we've got right? I have to admit... even a decidedly tiny garage is better... by far... than no garage.
Thanks mueckster. I always liked your truck... hoping to eventually build this one into something similar. :-) Thanks for setting such a great example.
