How do you know when your water pump is starting to go south? My truck has 90,000 miles on it and I'm starting to get a chirping noise in and around the front of the motor when its running. Who makes the best replacement pump, and how hard is it to change out? Thanx Mike
The weep hole on the pump will start to seep coolant.
You'll see it drip down the block back behind the crank pulley and gather on the lip of the oil pan. If you want to really make sure, run a clean rag between the crank pulley and the waterpump pulley. If you find fresh ooze there, it be your waterpump.
Not a bad job...gotta drain your coolant, remove serpentine, and it is easiest to rent the special tool to loosen the fan clutch and get the fan and shroud off...From there, its just loosening bolts, scraping gaskets off the mating surface, and installing the new pump.
If your pump is indeed bad, now would be a good time to maybe think about changing out your thermostat and housing.
Northern Auto parts has a good deal on new Airtex pumps, will come with all your gaskets and a new elbow, which could eliminate some headaches (right Clay haha). Dieselsite sells the 203* thermostat and billet housings.
Not sure if it wasn't mentioned before but it wouldn't be a bad idea on changing your coolant at the time to an ELC if you can, give your truck some new coolant with that waterpump, do a good flush before. Also, if you plan on keeping your truck for a long time, might want to add a coolant filter setup like I posted here here's the sand and possible dropout the filter caught, extend the life of your new waterpump.
could be the bearings in the front of the pump.take off the belt and grab the fan and see if it rocks back and forth any. if it does replace it before it and the radiator become real good friends

I agree, mine chirped for maybe a day or two, no seep at weep hole, and all of a sudden it let go antifreeze everywhere. The bearing was so loose the impeller was rubbing the housing inside. Buy new not rebuilt, only a few dollars more.
i was a mechanic for several years and worked at a napa auto parts for a few years. whenever possible i always say buy a new waterpump rather than a rebuilt one. i have seen many rebuilt ones fail for various reasons and best i recall only have seen one new part come back bad. not saying new parts wont fail but it seems to happen alot less. imho this goes for most any parts[alternator, starters, etc] no matter where they are purchased.

Hard to say with out hearing the "squeak", but if it is your W/P, it's ready to check out. There is probably a considerable amount of "knock" noise that you probably attribute to the engine, that actually is the W/P. Do the belt off, grab test of the fan... just be prepared to catch it, if it FALLS off!
I've done so many I can hear one with the the hood closed. Friend of mine had his truck inspected by Ford prior to his purchase. They gave him a clean bill of health, but noted they added 2 quarts coolant. When he came over to show me his new truck, my first question was, "When you puttin a water pump on!" He showed me the report, I showed him the fan falling off, he went back to the dealer... and that's when the fight started
