It's time for new tires on the bus and am unsure of what to buy. The last set of BFG a/t's lasted 30k with a d load rating. I was looking at the nitto terra grapplers in an e range as well as the hankook rf10 and the firestone destination a/t. I like the bfg's but it is time for a new look. I am going with 305/70 16 on 8'' procomp wheels.
Thanks in advance for your input on what works or didnt work for you.
Joe
I have the hankook on my superduty and i have been happy with them, then again i only have close to a 900 miles on them now after taking a couple longer trips this past week (they have only been on since the 12/5 though).
I have the Nitto Terra Grapplers in E Load Range, have had them on for about 2K miles so far. As for my initial thoughts, these things cut through some water. Being I live in Florida, we dont get too much snow (None Existent) so i cant tell you about that. And I dont go off roading, so I cant add anything to that as well but I like the aggresive look to the tire that is quiet on the road and cuts through water with no pulling.
I have Michelin LTX M/S Load Range 'E' tires on my Ex right now. I had them on my 1999 F250 for about 30,000 miles, just swapped them onto the ex when I sold the truck, and they still look new. I got hooked on these tires when my previous employer used these on his Chevy Express 3500 Vans that hauled around about 2,000 lbs all the time and occasionally added another ton. He used to get about 50,000+ miles out of these tires. They are an expensive purchase, but the tread looks like a highway tire, but is actually quite good in Mud and Snow. It has factory siping (?Spelling). The sipes help keep the tire cool and they do wonders in snow and rain.
This is my first lifted Rig and I have been very impressed with the Toyo Open Country M/T. Some roar, but they're 37s and I'm happy with them besides the price tag
X2 on the Nitto Terra Grapplers. Even the FAT 325/60/18's I'm running on the Excursion are smooth as glass up to 100mph. They are quiet and provide excellent traction, even at 40% tread.
The Michelin LTX's I took off prolly had over 70k miles on them, but had the WORST wet/snow/mud traction of any tire I have ever owned.
I have run (2) sets of Yokohama Geolander AT's on my dually. I was pleased with them 40-50k miles per set and good traction in the rain & snow.
Currently running 255/85/16 Toyo M55's on the dually now. They are over 50k miles now and have been a great tire. Seriously tough as nails. This is a GREAT size tire for any stock 3/4 or 1 ton truck or Excursion IMHO.
My recommendation is to stick with E-rated tires. I prefer the safety of the extra capacity (I have been known to overwork everything I've ever had from time to time) and the added tire pressure increases stability in almost every condition.
MICHELINS - Pricey but, IMHO, you get what you pay for!
I put Michelin LTX A/S E tires (road tread) on my X at 15,000 miles. Just took them off at 82,000 and put Michelin AT2 E tires (off road tread) on for the winter. Kept the A/S tiires since they have about another 20,000 miles on them and will run them this summer. Bought a set of used X rims off Ebay to put the A/S tires on.
Like SkySkiJason I highly recommend the E tires. The extra air pressure significantly increases handling when towing. I normally run 65 to 70 PSI year around. I found the tires wear better and the no load handling is a lot better.
Never had a bad set or poor mileage out of Michelins. Have them on my Zo6 and Jetta TDI.

General HTS's E-ply
It's time for me for new skins. The tire dude was trying to talk me into the General HTS E-load 285 75 R16s he had in his inventory. I wanted to stay at stock 265s but he insisted the 285s would fit fine. And even suggested a slight mileage per gallon increase. I said I'd think about it (meaning I'd ask my buddiesfirst). First and foremost though, I don't buy the mpg arguement...but I want to make sure my ride quality and all would be cool with the 285s?

I'm running 285/75R16 BFG AT TA's load d right now....these are fine and there's no rubbing but don't know what the difference in a D and E would be such as the ride quality
