just got a torque wrench that goes from 20ft-lbs to like 200. my question is im getting ready to do a service myself on the truck involving drianing the axles draining transission pan, replacing bothe fuel filters and enigine oil. will 20ft-lbs be a low enough torque setting to do everything i want with it or should i get a different one. (or do i even need the torque wrench)
I just bought another (snap-on) torque wrench off of ebay (we will see how wise that was). It is 5 to 75 ft-lbs. Thia is a good range for some of the "easy work" on these trucks. I have access to a calibration machine at work to verify its accuracy. I also found a couple of places that will calibrate the wrench if it is off (and the overall cost will still be below original price of a new snap-on).
Many people just use the "tighten by feel" method on the filter caps since it is the o-ring that seals. I use a torque wrench since I have one. Be careful though, because some folks have broken the pastic caps.
I am now looking for a torque wrench in the range you bought. What brand did you buy?
If you want to go buy torque specs then yes you will have to get one more like what mark just bought. I personaly wouldnever waste my time on torquing any of the stuff you listed. Don't know many that will.
I have the snap-on tech wrench, it does Ft lbs, IN lbs, NM, torque angle all in one. The torque angle is what makes this thing the cats meow. Anyhow, its a little pricey at around $500 but you could not buy all the wrenches that you would need for twice this much. You can get a cheaper version that does it all except torque angle, but cant imagine not haveing tq angle.
Actually you also need an inch pound wrench. The 5 ft. lb. wrench that Mark has equates to 60 inch pounds min. There may be a few applications that may require a lower torque.
