The intake manifold has a hole for the distributor and the thermostat mounts to the front surface of the manifold. I believe this is the 360/390 manifold. the truck was manufactured 08/76. What motor is this? how can you tell a 360 from a 390?
I thought 76 was the last year of FE. Do you have an FE first of all? FE's have plugs that angle toward the center of each head. FE's have valve covers that extend over part of the intake manifold. FE's are a "Y Block" design where the block extends below the centerline of the crank. These features above are unique to FE's (except for Y-block design, there are motors from the 50's and early 60's with this) Regarding the 360-390 issue, you cannot tell externally, you must measure the stroke to know. There is a dowel trick that can accomplish this. A 390 has a 3.78" stroke, a 360 3.50". I haven't tried it but it involves inserting a length of dowel through a spark plug hole and measuring the distance between TDC and BDC. In following the threads for awhile, I have seen it said that in the 73-76, that 4x4 didn't come from the factory w/ 390, only 360. Something to do with concern over a 390's torque potential. Perhaps you have one of the last FE's built at Ford.
As far as I know the 390 was not offered as a truck engine. The 360 was the truck engine and the 390 was a car engine. '76 was last year the 360/390 was offered from the factory. In '77 they started using 351/400.
Not sure what you meant TR about the 390 not being offered in trucks. The 390 was offered in trucks as a factory option starting in the 1968 model year and ending with 1976 model year trucks. A truck manufactured 8/76 is a 1977 model year vehicle.
I have what to beleief a 77 f-250 4x4 not sure of the year I replaced the cab so is there any stamp on the motor or fram to tell the year the engine is 351m and is the original engine. also does anyone know what the hourse power is for this engine
thanks for the help
skit please email me with any answers you have ghost8@exploremaine.com
Maybe this will clear some things up. I know for a fact in early 77 you could get a F250 4x4 with a 360 or 390. These engines also had duraspark ingnition. My Uncle has had one of these trucks since it was brand new and the truck is 100% original. These trucks were the last of the true highboys.(Ones with the narrower frame.)I not sure about the 2 wheel drives but i think in 77 they all came with the M-block engines.
