yea buddy, old fords rule!!! josh, the mustang t-5 trans will bolt up to the engine no problem. yes you will need to convert the linkage. but it does work...good luck.
If you went with a T5 from a mUstang, you need a T5 bellhousing as its different from the standard toploader style bellhousing. The flywheel is also different. Because these t5s were used after the balance chenge nade in 1982, you would have to have the flywheel rebalnced to a 28oz figure suitable for your engine. The T5 flywheels are 50oz balance. Don't let this scare you as its easliy down by an engine balnce shop. The T5 has internal shift linkage so nothing would have to be done for this. The clutch linkage is different. The T5 is cable operated. There are some businesses that sell modified bellhousing to work with mechanical linkages. This is done alot with retrofitting T5s into older Mustangs;ie 65/70 or so.
Thanks for the info. I,ve got a '95 GT(my wife's) maybe she'll let me barrow the transmition. What do you guys think?? Anyway, I really appreciate the help. How much do the T-5's run used?
According to the Magazine article which quotes prices from a place called: Mustang Village (909 823-7915) The non-WC version is sold used for $350 the WC version $450-650. The WC version is a beefed up model that will handle more torque from v8's. My 89 Camaro has the WC version. By the way, the Chev versions won't work with Ford because of Bellhouseing incompatabilities. The article says that for torquey V8 applications, that even the WC version (also made for Fords) are marginal. I've not had any probs w/ my Camaro tranny under mild abuse and everyday driving. Of course the Camaro is light compared to a truck. The article also states that a rebuild from S&K Speed ( www.skspeed.com ) is $750 w/ exchange. D&D Fabrication (www.tir.com/~gtstang/dd) sells new Ford Racing Z boxs for $1049. The top rated T5 is Ford Racings "z" box. Stick only is another T5 resource (818 768 4747) Fortes transmission advertises Tremecs 3550 which is a improved T5 type tranny with shifter locations better suited for truck use. The Mustang T5 is going to locate your shifter away's back of the bellhouseing.
Did'nt notice this post was 8 years old!! Ok guys 1st you can't use a late mod mustang trans in a truck, the shifter location is not movable it would be in the middle of the seat. True the tremac has multiple mounting locations but they did not come as factory equipment.
All that is needed is a 3sp OD from a 77thru90 f100 or f150 engine is not important for this as they all use the same trans, but you would be wasting your time and money going for the 3spOD when there are many more 5spOD's out there, and yes they are 5 forward grears 5th being 082 or 067, no I don't know which is which but that info is available. Go to the bone yard get yourself a 5sp with the straight shifter, bent one if you want a granny gear, get everything from the flywheel back including the driveshaft(s) and be sure to get the slave cylinder(s) from the firewall as well. Be sure not to cut the plastic line from the trans to the slave cylinder, there is a tool to remove it without damaging it. The only real problem I see anyone having is that after ford went to the electronic speedo. The 5spd has the boss on the tail shaft for the mechanical drive but I do not know if the tail shaft it's self has the place for you to mount the internal gear to drive the cable, maybe someone else knows.
And by the way you could get the 3spdOD trans, the cast iron one with the external linkage, with the shifter on the column if you were looking for the stock appearance thing. mac
