My 78 f-150 with auto tranny has a terrible amount of slop in the column shifter. It moves OK and i can get it into any of the gears ok but the lil lady has some trouble with it. Just wondering what parts in the column typically wear out and cause this. Also how difficult is it to fix and is it expensive?

When you say slop, what actually do you mean?
1) Do you have to wiggle the shift lever in Park or Neutral to get the truck to start?
2) Or does the shift lever and collar have a lot of play in them when in a specific position (an up/down side to side motion)?
3) By moving the lever, is it difficult to engage Park, Drive, or Reverse?
4) Does the shift lever get stuck in one position (bind up)?
Each of these 4 possibles require different parts to fix the slop.

Number 2 is my symptom. All the rest are pretty much OK - like I said it works Ok but it is mostly just annoying that you have to flop the lever around to make sure your in the right gear. Sometimes it seems like you don't have it in Park all the way although its never actually not gone in. Just the slop in the lever makes you uncertain. Kinda worries me since Im sure using the parking brake would be a major problem due to all of the rust on this truck - i never use it. I assume it is the shift lever and collar that are worn out but I want to make sure I don't need anything else - thats why I asked. With the shifter engaged in any one position the lever will move up and down or side to side 1-2 inches in any direction. Thanks for the help.
I've got the exact same problem with my '78. After shifting to "D" and letting go of the shifter, it loosely drops and the pointer moves to "2". I'm constantly grabbing the shifter and making sure I'm in Drive.
I'm going to guess and say that the collar is worn out internally where it connects to the shifting sleeve. I see that Nat'l Parts Depot sells replacement collars for $80, too bad my wallet is not quite as loose as my shifter
I'll have to check the pin - I can't remember if the lever only has the slop or if the collar is what moves - might be a combination of both. I will have to let you know. thanks for the help
I pretty much have symptoms 1-3. I see we've covered number two, but what are the other possibilities for the first and third problem. I do need to play with the shifter to get it to start from time to time, I do have a hard time getting it to shift into reverse and need to double check that I'm actually in drive before taking off.
Just bumping this back up to see if anyone can help. I'm at the point in the project where I need to address this part.
Is it worth it just to replace the collar and bushing and see where it goes from there? I see JBG has the collar for $20 and the bushing for $5. Seems like it would be worth a shot.
I haven't hardly had time to drive the truck much less work on it so I haven't really addressed the problem, though with some closer inspection it appears the pin that connects the lever to the collar is worn and has ovaled out the hole. Hopefully someday I get it straightened out and can post the results...
I'd like a little help on this subjest too. My indicator is gone on my 79 350 4x4, and there are no detents in the column either. is that all in the collar?
