I have a 01 f150 5.4l.. i recently cut out about a foot of exhaust tube between the cats and muffler, so the muffler is hanging there useless. Ive heard people say it will eventually cause some problems due to no backpressure from the muffler, but i have a buddy with a 97 z71 with the 5.7l and hes been running with no muffler for a while and seen no problems. Anyone have any input to the backpressure problem? Any other negatives to what i did to my exhaust (besides it not being legal)?
its not necesarilly the lack of mufflers or cats, but more a lack of piping. if you take out the mufflers, you need the piping. the shorter the pipe, the more likely cold air is to get sucked back in when its shut off and warping valves. im not saying that this WILL happen, just that it MAY happen. ive seen it happen to the small deisel on our tractor back home. just something to think about.
I was going to say what fordf150farmer said. However the only reason I was going to say that is that my dad ex-mechanic said that taking the muffler/silencer off my dirtbike would could mess with the valves. i was very young and didn't know any better. whether this is true or not I don't know. Maybe he told me that just so I wouldn't do it.
