hard down shift

i have an automatic trany that has been very well maintained since birth-
when i accelerate it shifts perfect but when it down shifts from 4 - 3 it shifts hard and then its smooth the rest of the way.
any ideas?

if i shut the OD switch off then it never gets to the highest gear and everything will shift smooth

Just a guess since it just recently started it after all of these years you have some wear at some point. Not sure the miles on the fluid but a total bucket flush with synthetic ATF would be my first step I think. It as seen a lot of action over the years with more than the amount of factory HP in front of it I gather from your signature.

If it does not go away with fluid exchange it may just be something to adjust too. At least you can keep ir from down shifting under a lot of power or kept it out of OD when on roads where it normally shifts in and out of OD.

After buying a new transmission I keep the new one out of OD on some secondary roads due to advice from the transmission shop.

I see you posted about OD use while I was typing and figured out a work around which is good to know how to do when our equipment gets some age on it. We farmed with worn out equipment but we did not loan it to others.

my first question is what kind of shift kit is in it? the 4-3 downgear harshness could be the way fluid is channeled to the clutch coupled to the reactivation of the torque converter clutch
