Since I got my truck it has had this problem. I think its the filler neck or something on the front tank. It prevents me from holding the handle even half way down on the nozzle at the gas station otherwise it clicks and turns off and I cant fill my tank fas. The rear tank has no problems getting filled. So it takes twice as long to fill the front tank. Any suggestions?
i think it has something to do with the gas bubbling back up into the nozzle it use to do with mine with certain gas stations but doesn't do to often now
What's happening is the inner hose of the filler is either missing or gotten folded up. On my truck(89 F250) the PO removed it and that causes gas and air venting out of the tank to surge back out hince the fuel handle clicking off all time(thinking its a full tank).
The fix is making sure that inner hose is not missing, mangled or full of holes and also long enough to gointo the tank. On my 84 when I went to EFI I removed and tossed that inner hose(dumb move) So I had to make up another way for the tank to vent when filling up. I made up a much larger vent line from top of the tank and hooked it into the filler pipe(had to braze a fitting to it off truck naturily) and that took care of the slow filling problems. These tanks need to be vented big time as these newer Filling station handles are getting really sensitive now days.
Another possablity is you have a rollover valve at the end of the filler inside the tank thats jammed up(this was on my 95/96 E350 bus). I doubt the pickups had them but its possable.
