I just recently bought a 2003 f250 6.0l. with 137k on it. The truck ran awesome when I first bought it and I haven't had any problems until now. I believe that my turbo is sticking. If my truck sits for a while like while I'm in a store or at the house when I come back and go to leave my turbo is now coming on. Today I went to get on the interstate and it didn't come on until I hit a large bump and then it kicked in and I took off. Is this a sign that I need to tear it apart and clean it? This is my first diesel truck. The truck is all stock except for some crappy Air Raid intake he put on, which that is another question I have. Does anyone know where I can find a stock intake, I heard the stock is pretty good on the 6.0 up until you really start throwing out the ponies. Thanks in advance for the Help. Clayton
Taking it apart, inspecting it for damage, cleaning, and trying it out will be cheaper than replacing it. If it's damaged or cleaning doesn't help it, then replace it. From the sounds of it, the vanes are sticking.
Trash the Air Raid and try to find an OEM Donaldson....What you've heard is correct. Some swear by aftermarket intakes but the overwhelming opinion is that the factory Donaldson is best up to 500-550 HP. Here's a link to a used part search site where there are several listed to fit your truck:
would cleaning my turbo fix it or do you think i need a whole new turbo?
Jax50 I would definately get rid of the airraid intake. Might find one on eBay not for sure. The turbo........ I'm no expert but there's a right up in the tech folder on how to clean it and inspect the parts inside it. I would definately check into that before you go to drastic measures. They're not that hard to take apart and clean. The bugger is getting it out. If ya do it there's also a vgt learn writeup in the tech folder to do after ya get it done. I know I've missed something and there might be some other things to check on but your definately on the right forum for your question.
Powerstroke, thanks for the help and the link. I fond a stock air box and its on the way. I figured I would clean it first I just wanted to make sure.
Shawn, Thanks too, I'm new to the diesel world but have fallen in love with this truck in just a month. I have never really worked on a diesel so this is all new to me. But I'm excited to learn.
Anybody know if the instruction on removing the turbo are on here? I found the cleaning tech guide, but have had negative results with "removing turbo" and "turbo removal".
