Drivin home from work today I felt a shutter. The Turbo on my 6.0L started to spurge...Wooosh woosh woosh......I lost some power. Truck still runs, no matter how many pounds the turbo is pushin as soon as I let off the pedal it will spurge. Loud and long......Feels like the truck is suffocating, lacking power. I have looked on the forums and cant find this exact problem. Does anyone have the slightest idea of what it might be? I took the intake off and looked in the turbo the best I could. Cant see anything wrong. (as if I know what to look for) haha.....Any help would be much obliged.
Thanks for the welcome! 2005 F350 6.0L Powerstroke. AFE Intake. Edge with Attitude Juiced Performance Chip. 5 inch exhaust. Recently had a new EGR Cooler and head gasket replaced. No other motor repairs. Im pretty sure it is the turbo...It has that real bad whooosh whoosh wooosh sound, I can also feel the air kickin back out of the intake. Truck isnt blowing smoke....it blows ALOT of black smoke....when it runs the way it should anyway....It also takes a while a bit longer to shift, the rpms exceed 3500 and the shifts are looooong and delayed. Anything else ya need to know?
the term you are refering to is called turbo flutter. its somewhat normal. excessive turbo flutter can be a sign of a sticking turbo or it can be normal.
Black smoke is under boost and the turbo fart or flutter is excess boost escaping from the intake. For an 03 I would say if the turbo is original, Cheezit is probably right, sticking unison ring.
Well...with the upgrades I have, the black smoke is expected. I never had a flutter like this until today. The only time I ever had the turbo flutter is when I was under a load at a high rpm and let off the pedal rapidly. I unplugged something off the top of the turbo, the flutter went away, but I couldnt hear my turbo spoolin. Wasnt registerin on any of the gauges either. So I plugged that back in and did some more research. I have seen alot of posts talking about the VGT......what in the world is that? lol. Do I just take the ole truck down and pick up a new one?
I had a bad VGT solenoid a couple of years ago. All it did was take forever to spool up. Dealer changed it under warranty. But I never had any flutter...Interesting.
the vgt is the thing you unpluged on the turbo earler today. it has 2 wires going to it. but that stops the flutter from happening because that is what drives the unison ring cam. also you may want to look at the ebp values as they may also have an effect on turbo flutter.
also does it do it only with the programer?
