cab swap

I am looking to swap cabs for my 67 F250 4x4. It's a great truck with 50K original miles, BUT cab is about to fall off the frame. I think I have a line on a rust free 72 F100, so my question is, how difficult is this swap and if anyone has experience with this kind of thing.

take off the front clip and it's like 4 bolts and the gas lines. not long to do.

Yeah, might be a bit more than just 4 bolts...

*The 67 heater controls are different, so will the 72 controls just hook on?
*The 67 doors are unique also -- I think the hinges are the same, but the guts are different. You prolly want to swap on the 67 doors to keep your vin.
*Are the tranny's the same? If not, does the 4gear have a bigger bump in the cab than a 3speed (for instance)? I know that in my 64 chevvvvvy I had to hack the 4speed bump onto the three speed cab...
*The electrics for the speedo console are prolly different as well. The 67 isn't a printed circuit board, the 72 is. I don't think they are plug compatible.

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head -- not to discourage you from your project...

I agree, body's are the same series so the lines will be the same. Tranny differences can have floor/column shifting differences, but the columns can be swapped if needed. All other items should be minor and parts used from current cab.

My suggestion would be to pull the cab and front clip together so all the fender rehanging and alignment could be avoided. Grills could be swapped for correct look.

Does the '72 cab have interior parts? Like the heater controls? Wiring? Dash?

I swapped cabs years ago with unknown year cab and just used existing wiring and wasn't a problem. Mounted my doors, the engine compartment wirings isn't a big deal to swap over. OR, take your wiring harness and use it in the '72 cab and use your instrument cluster. Only issue is mounting and hooking up heater controls. Still not a big deal. Still has defrost and heat *****, just in different mounts. Very doable.

Unless you have a very big crane, don't try to take front clip with cab. Plus the fact he's replacing only his cab, it's not worth it.

That is total BS! There isn't much weight in it, just awkward. Probably no more than 600lbs total. It doesn't take a big crane to lift 600lbs.

It is very well worth it not to have to align the fenders and bolt everything back. A rust free cab should bring the doors with it also.

Come on!

I replaced cab on my 71F350 with a cab from an F250(both 2WD) and removed front clip first because of mount issues and fender liner issues plus I got a hood and front fender with replacement cab of which I needed both. Took front clip off with tractor and 3 pt lift with an A frame type pole. Used my friend's front loader to remove/replace cabs using nylon straps thru the doors. Wasn't a problem except my F350 has rear cab mounts that are closer together(or was it farther apart) and didn't realize until noticed the holes didn't line up. Not a real problem as the cab was already ding marked where to drill.

cab swap

Thanks for all the info everyone. I would be buying the whole 72 F100, cab, doors, bed, everything (so there may be a complete truck frame and running gear for sale at a later date). My thought is to leave as much of the 72 intact when I swap the cab. I'm not sure if the 72 is automatic or column shift. the four speed hump in the 67 should work.

just dont forget that your truck info and vin are on the drives door, and if you want a 67 truck you need the 67 doors as they are different (as mentioned). and i am not sure about how legal it is to take the vin plate off one door and put it on the other as cops know (atlest some) how they were attached to the door. good luck!

I guess it depends on how 67 you want to keep your 67 (or if it really matters!) -- I think in 67 the marker lights turn off when the headlights turn on, in 68 and later the marker lights stay on when the headlights are on... Just a subtle difference.
