Trouble with getting into 4WD

My 94 F150 (4x4) wouldn't go into 4WD mode when I pressed the button. I'd hear a click, the lights would dim slightly, and then soon after a quieter click. The lamp would not light.

I tapped the motor on the transfer case, and the transfer case, with a hammer. Now it works normally.

Question: should I check the fluid? And/or should I replace the control module (which I guess is part of the motor)?

Thanks!

"motor"= Solenoid, and yes. Thats most likely the problem.

Sounds like the motor was frozen with rust. Either replace the T-case motor with a fresh one, or replace all of it with a manual t-case.

It will not hurt a thing to make sure your T-case is full of fluid either, but this probably wasnt contributing to the frozen t-case motor. Using the 4wd a little more often will keep the motor limbered up.

this may be a stupid question, but did you let the vehicl roll?
Had a customer a while ago, had a newer chevy trailblazer, he could not get 4wd to disengage, but in the directions it says that it may not diengage untill it rolls in the oposite direction.

If it is not used much then could be a onetime thing. But I have seen alot of electrical problems with auto 4x4 on all brands. I recomend going with a manual.

id say get a t-case out of a 87 f150 with a manual shift t-case.... you would have to make a hole in the floor pan and if done correctly it is worth the trouble... i dont trust anything electric i always try to convert to manual if possible

I did try rolling, reverse, forward, neutral. Everything. Looks like I can get a module for $100.

But now I have a new problem which may or may not be related. The ride is a little bouncy at slow speeds, and the truck is unsafe to drive above 30 MPH. 2WD or 4WD doesn't matter. It feels like there is a bubble on the tire, but there isn't. Could a new module fix this?

I'll probably create a new thread for this issue. Maybe it is a wheel bearing or steering....?

Thanks again!
