I went to put my 94 Bronco in 4wd the other day and I pushed the button on the dash. The light came on like normal but went off after about 30 sec. I hit it again and the same thing happened. I shut the truck off and when I restarted it the 4x4 light is on in the dash but the truck is not in 4wd. I checked the junk yard for a shift motor for the transfer case and he said they all go bad.Has anyone had one of these fail on them? I'm thinking of putting in a manual T case.Has anyone done this? The junk yard told me it would cost $500 to $600 for a used case. That sounds high to me but I don't know
I would put a manual case in! But $500 does sound very high for a junkyard. I'd look around a lot. It pays to check the classified sections of sites like this one. (Over on the right menu)
Good Luck
I had a 91 Ranger Elec. 4x4 Shift and the motor went out on me. I called auto parts stores and everyone told me that I would have to go to the dealer. The dealer told me the motor was about $250.oo. That sounds alot beter than $500-600. It may not be your motor though. Just thought I would let you know that little bit of info. Hope it all works out for ya.
Most of the time this is caused by a lack of use. Mine did the same thing. The contacts inside of the shift motor get corroded. Get under the truck and have someone press the 4x4 button. When they do this, give the shift motor a light rap with a rubber or plastic mallet. This helped with mine. Then USE it! Shift it in and out alot. Try to use it at least once a month.
