My 02' 7.3L hates the cold. After pugging it in and adding anti gel, the ole gal really hates starting in the cold. It'll turn over for a few seconds before cranking then dies then will stay running after another few seconds after turning it over. For the first few minutes or until the engine gets warm theres a whining from the engin and billowing exhaust. is this normal and what can i do to help the truck out with cranking in the mornings.. p.s. both mornings it has done this its been around 4 degrees out..
Have you checked your GPR to make sure the glow plugs are working? The sound you hear, we call the jet engine sound. It's the EBPV closing to put a load on the engine to help warm it up faster. That is normal.
My engine whines just a little bit when it's at that low of temp. It's my PS pump but it'll go away after a minute of running. Just way to cold for it. Some white smoke is also normal at that temp as well.
Like Rick said, check the GPR to make sure it's working and also battery condition. Plus, clean all battery connections too - you'll need every ounce of CCA's to get the truck running. Remember, it's a diesel and they are not happy when it get's this cold out.
