If you knew all that and were asking about the HPOP (the pump that supplies the high pressure oil), then an indication of a weak pump is a P1211 code on hard accelerations (pretty normal on trucks with hot tunes on stock injectors though). To test it, run your truck in a stock tune and get a way to watch the ICP (injection control pressure). If in stock, it drops below about 2500psi (closer to 2800 is best), your pump is getting tired. Some guys have had theirs drop below 1500psi, then it's obvious. However, if you have rough running & hard starts, it could be a lot of other things, like wiring harness, IPR (injector pressure regulator), etc, etc.
What are you having issues with that makes you ask?
I am having rough starts, rough running in the beginning and bad diesel milage. I have put on a delete pipe, running the Napa air filter and I am running AmsOil in the motor.
The Injector Pump question was from my father (diesel truck mechanic) and brother.
Could it be that the screen in the tank is plugged up?
Could it be that the fuel pump is becoming weak and not supplying the popper fuel pressure to the fuel rails there by causing poor fuel economy and tough starts?
Have you changed your fuel filter yet?
Have you pulled the codes from the PCM?
You could also have a bad exhaust back pressure sensor, that little bugger has been known to cause these motors to act like turds.
I have changed the filter, checked the PCM. No codes. I have not heard of the exhaust back pressure sensor. That would send a code, no?
I have to find a way to check the pressure at the rails.
There was also a post about the injector rings leaking.
Yes, EBPS would send a code. Mine does, just haven't had a chance to replace it yet, but it isn't effecting my power or milage yet either.
As to what other possibilities there are, well someone else will have to chime in as I'm not as much of an expert as others that are on this forum.
That sensor gives the truck information in regards to manifold pressure and is used not only for whet the truck is cold but when it is running at normal temp.
Okay. All I know is that the pig should be getting more than 12-13 mpg while towing two Icelandic horses in a little bumper pull 2 horse trailer!
I read a different thread about the copper rings/seals not holding pressure and thus decreasing gas milage.
Just trying to figure out what is wrong with the pig. After Christmas, I will be looking into a DP tuner. But I am worried about that not helping much if there is something bigger wrong or a bunch of little things wrong.
Not necessarily. Where are you located?? Winter diesel will cause a drop in mileage. I've heard of folks getting that empty, so I wouldn't sweat that too much. Rough starts can be because of the cold, and it can romp if you're running dino oil.
I get about 10mpg pulling a 30ft boat weighing in at 7Klbs including the trailer and the boat is about 12ft tall. The rest of the time, running around town I'm 15-18 and 19 to 23 on the hwy as long as I keep the RPMs under 2K
