I've had a little surge in my 03 for a little while now but wasnt too worried because it only did it in 6th gear when i was really hard in it (like interstate on ramps). Now it has started doing it in 5th gear when i pass someone, it doesn't do it all the time but anything more than mild acceleration will make it surge bad enough that i can feel it in the truck instead of just hearing it like it does in 6th. Is it bad enough to replace the turbo or will something like the ATS housing fix it? I'd like to replace it with a slightly better turbo but $450 for a housing is alot better than $1200 for a turbo. Is there another option? I try to drive pretty easy (fuel mileage) but sometimes I need that turbo to get around "grandpa" but don't want to tear it up. Any help is greatly appreciated here guys! Thanks.
X2 what Chris said, they are your best options. When you do decide what path you take and have the turbo out, check for in and out play on the shaft, where the wheel sits. Also check to see if the wheel comes in contact with the housing, if it does, you'll have it out and can rebuild it if need be...
I had thought about the WW but have heard that it flows less air... Is the lesser air flow noticable as in less power? Thanks for the prompt replies guys.
You do loose a pound or two of boost and for me, it seemed I had to push the go pedal down a bit more to go but to loose or minimize the surge was great for me towing. If I had to do it all over again, I would put on an ATS ported housing, guys use them with great sucsess and here's where to get it, great fella and great service. Thanks for the help everyone, either way its a lot cheaper than a new turbo! Is there anything else I can do to "improve" the turbo while I have it out? Some of the homemade modifications this site is famous for maybe?

Good time to check your Up-pipes for leaks and your pedestal as well.
Yeah I'm pretty sure I have a small leak in my pedestal somewhere. Just been waiting to find a good modification to do while it's out. I'll be switching to synthetic oil as soon as I get the o-rings replaced and the leak gone.
You might also consider a Van Turbo. There are quite a few folks running them. You can find them for under $500, bigger exhaust housing, better top end performance and great for towing. Dropped my EGT's a good 200 degrees while towing. I have had it on my 2003 7.3L for about 80K miles. A great upgrade for the $.
