over heating

91 7.3L overheating, heater will not blow hot or even warm air. It seems that every time you try the heater it makes the engine temp peg out on the hot side. Heater was working this morning until the truck overheated and now it only blows cold air. It is about -20 right now in Montana not sure if that makes any difference.

You could be either froze up or low on coolant.

If you have any antifreeze it will not be froze but can be too thick to circulate, if so you may damage your engine. you need to check the level of protection first.
I hate the 50-50 antifreeze sold nowadays if you aren't careful people only put half the antifreeze they need.

The truck should not have overheated possible stuck thermostat, possible not enough antifreeze for -20 and possible stopped up heater core.
The heater core would not cause it to overheat.

My guess, your overheating was the result of not enough antifreeze, which would not let coolant flow.

So now you either have semi solid coolant not letting coolant circulate or an air pocket in the heater core.

Did you change any parts to correct the overheating or just replace coolant?
Any chance you can get the truck in a warmer place?

The truck just overheated this morning for the first time ever. I had an extra gallon of antifreeze with me and it took almost all of it. Drove home just fine with the needle barely on the not side of being straight up and down and then it shot up to hot again and overheated a couple blocks from home. I believe that the thermostat is stuck closed. I am just having trouble getting the housing off as all the brackets for the alternator and water separator are in the way. I don't have anyplace warmer to put the truck and i really need to get this done today as it is supposed to -45 below tomorrow.

With fluids on your hands, that is going to be a bear.

Were the temps dropping while you were driving home?

Plug in your block heater that will help a little with the fluids on your hands thing.
First open the drain on the bottom of radiator and see how thick your fluid is.

I would say a couple tarps over the front of the truck blocking off as much air as possible from any direction and the block heater may take care of the problem.

If the coolant was slushed up in the radiator, no coolant was able to circulate, overheat.
Same for the heater core.
