Thanks David. Breaker bar I think will be my next trick. I believe it is the original IPR so I'm thinking I'll install a new one anyway as I try to solve my starting problem. Once I have a replacement in hand then I'll really try beating on it. I think I might not be transferring the effort efficiently through the wobble to the socket.
For now I just buttoned her back up.
I stuck in new Die Hard Platinum batteries today from Sears. 60 lbs each battery ... must be all lead
I didn't bother trying to make the socket as they have come down a huge amount in price lately. Right now they are on amazon for $19.
I've never used one of those sockets (though I should probably get one as cheap as they are now), but even when I use a big wrench - when the turbo is out - that first pull takes some effort to break it loose. Then you can almost screw it out by hand. I think you're right on with the concern about the wobble. The straighter the extensions, the better. Don't be afraid to romp on it. Once it breaks loose, you might break the skin on your knuckles if anything is nearby on the down stroke.
I've replaced my IPR once before by removing the turbo and getting at it that way. Wasn't exactly what I would call easy, but it wasn't over difficult either.
I kept reading about this socket tool that allows you to remove the IPR "in minutes" without removing the turbo. Well, I got the socket and now spent over twice as much time on the repair as when I pulled the turbo. Could have something to do with having to work on it in the massive amounts of rain we are getting in WA right now, but regardless......
I've removing airbox, degas bottle, FICM, FICM brackets and I can get to the IPR. I've tried all sorts of combinations of wobblys and different sized extensions but I can't seem to get at a the right angle with enough pressure to get this thing broken loose. And yes, I've tried the breaker bar.....in fact, yesterday my wobbly snapped when trying to remove it with the breaker bar.
What am I missing here? I'm about ready to just pull the turbo....
It took me a pipe on the ratchet before I could break it loose when mine was removed this spring. Found out that the dealer replacing the STC back in 2010 did not install the heat shield, so bought a new one and put it on. Turbo was off when IPR was removed. Don't believe I could have done the removal without the turbo being off.
