So I was bored at work today and decided i wanted to remove my door emblems. So I did a few searches on here and couldn't find 1 thread that was a good step by step. I am a little over cautious about removing emblems from my truck after my tailgate incident. So I took all the info I found in other threads and used it to my advantage. And here is what I came up with.
What you need:
Alot of people had suggested different types of solvents to use for unsticking the emblem and getting the glue off afterward. I had three available.
In order of popularity in threads:
1. WD40
2. Goo-Gone
3. Simple Green
I used all three.
Set by step.
1. Take WD40 and spray all around the emblem. Let it soak in.
2. Use fishing line in a sawing motion to "cut" the emblem from the truck.
(note: it should not take much to cut through adhesive, if so spray more wd40)
Heres what it should look like after emblem is gone:
3. SOAK left over adhesive with WD40. Take an old gift card and use it to scrape away most of left over adhesive crud. (foamish looking stuff)
(note the wetter the foamish stuff is the easier)
4. Use Goo-Gone AND Simple Green to remover left over glue and dirt.
The dirt ring around it is the hardest part to get off. But it will just need some elbow grease.
Good post Nolan. but why are you taking them off? Putting new ones on?
When I took mine off, I used a plastic scraper and just worked it under the emblem and used alcohol to finish the cleaning. I didn't think about the string and WD-40. Good job.
I still have the "4x4" stickers on the bed & "F250" on the fenders, but thankfully when I bought my truck, there were no emblems on the doors. I like the "clean" look personally.
The 4x4 stickers will pull off as a whole piece if you use a hair dryer to heat them up as you pull. Medium heat to start with and go to high if needed. The paint will just need some light cleaning.
You can buy an eraser wheel at any auto body shop or supply store, there about 5 bucks each and one will last you a lifetime unless your doing a ton of them. they will fit any drill and the gunk dirt grime ect comes right off.
