During the winter months here in Michigan I run 5W-30. Seems to be like a good weight for MI weather.

5W- "Winter" @ freezing
40 @ operating temp. 212*F or 100*C, the boiling temp of water.

A lower winter viscosity index will get the oil flowing to the bearings quicker during the critical first seconds of cold start situations.

RotellaT 5W-40 is available in gallon jugs at WallyWorld. Wait for the sales...

I use Amsoil synthetic 5w-30 here in NE Ohio. Amsoil has been around since the early 1970's and is rated best overall. Check out the pour point test and the cold cranking viscosity test as well as all 7 test here https://www.amsoil.com/comparison/motor-oil.aspx . It's pricey, but if you use their filters, it can run up to 25k or 12 months before it's time to change. So that makes it cost effective, not to mention having your oil changes down to yearly instead of 3 months! Also you can become a preferred customer for $20 and save about 25% off of the price.

Am I the only one that likes to change my oil at shorter intervals or 3-4k miles? What if something gets in your oil filter at 1k miles in and you don't change it for another 14k? Plus, doing an oil change gets you in there to do other preventative things that you think about when you're doing it such as ball joints, tie rods, checking for leaks, checking brake and coolant levels, etc.

Oh well, you still gotta check your oil and look under your hood, but it's something you can do when you fuel up. You shouldn't just change it and forget about it.

Nope you're not the only one. I like to change mine about every 4k miles.
