Im looking to get the msd street fire ignition for my 85 L6. converted it to ds2. question is will this Msd box replace the ds2 fender mounted module, or does it add to the system and amplifiy the sparks. i wanted to buy this and add to the ds2 system and make it burn more efficiently. i want to keep the module i just bought?? dont know if this is a replacement for that or a part to add to the ignition system
IIRC the MSD 6a, Mallory, etc., can be wired stand alone or with the stock module...either way makes no difference in performance. The MSD site may have the wiring diagram in there someplace. Check the Summit Street & Strip box...usually a better buy $$ wise and it's the same as the big name brands. Using the GM HEI module is by far the cheapest way to go and probably just as effective. Check it out in the ignition section here: http://gofastforless.com/loser.htm
Just my experience. I added a Mallory HyFire 6a and a MSD2 Blaster coil to my engine before I had it overhauled with modifications and it made a noticeable difference (enough difference to be worth it to me) in starting and smoothing out the running. No more farting and falling over on winter formulation gas, no humping and bucking when decelerating. And that was with all the smog appliances hooked up and running and passing emissions prior to the ignition upgrade.
