I am running a stand alone MSD box with a DS2 distributor and an MSD TFI coil. Coil gets straight 12v, as research says it should. I have gone through 3 TFI's in 3 years. It is bolted to the block with about 1" space. Is this a heat issue? I have also tried a non msd tfi and it lasted a year.
Yes, I will mount it away from heat next, but am I missing something with the wiring? I know DS2 and TFI are different eras, but spark is spark. Ideas?
I like to "match" ignition and coil per manufacturers guidelines - either OE or aftermarket. From memory, MSD recommends their "blaster" coil with MSD6. That is what I'm running on my hot rod and no issues.
Also, aftermarket oil filled coils are supposed to be mounted vertically, more or less, with the spark wire up. Keeps all the coils covered with oil for cooling and prevents leaks. If horizontal mounting is needed, an epoxy filled coil is recommended. Agree too much heat does not help either.
I have just tried to install a new MSD Ready to Run Distributor and Blaster2 Coil. I have it at TDC. I have the plug wires in order and I installed the distributor and rotor directly facing number 1 plug. I followed the wiring diagram and ran the three wire where it said. Orange negcoil, redpositivecoil, blackground. I also hood the factory wires from the old coil back to the blaster. I can't get this thing running. I'm lost. It seemed to want to try and idle briefly before I gave up on it. Anyone have a detailed guide to install my particular distributor in a 76F150? Or possibly any advice.
Why would you hook the old wires up? You need to first make sure you remove the resistor wire and make sure you are feeding the new coil with 12v power and not 9v like was stock.

I didn't know what the old coil wires were used for. Is it okay to feed 12v from the battey directly to the positive terminal on the coil?
