Got'r Done! Truetrac Diff Install

Well, I finally got rid of my "one wheel wonder". Problem is, now I'm spinning two tires instead on one.
Here's a few pics of the install and the end result. I put in a new VSS ring, as Ford recommends not to reuse it.

Nice Roland, awesome. As per anything that gets close to wearing out on my truck, if I can afford it, I'm upgrading and that tru-trac is on my wish list, nice job..

on photo number 6 how come you had the rod on the dial there? shouldnt it be rotated 90 deg down so that the rod it touching the face of a tooth? then keep pinion from moving and rotate ring gear back ond fourt thus giving you the backlash? any way sweet, im jelouse

I'm oblivious to such an upgrade.

What are the advantages other than you spin both wheels?? Price? Disadvantages?

The dial indicator has a special adaptor, I used, that has a small ball on each end of its pin and at its fulcrum point. It screws in the end of the dial instead of perpendicular to it. You can see the small plunger on the back of the dial that use would add an extension to if used like you said. Just made it easier for me to see the dial this way. I've done several differentials and had these tools, with their other adaptors, since the '80s. I used them when degreeing cams also.

$625 with shipping. It included the Truetrac, new carrier bearings & races, carrier bearing shim packs, and a cover gasket. However, I didn't use the gasket.

Thanks, guys. I feel it was a cost effective option to a Ford Trac-Lok. It was actually cheaper when factoring in the additional parts and it doesn't have clutches to wear out. Basicly, worry free, except for routine gear oil changes.

Looks to me like you measured the backlash incorrectly with that tool, however a carrier swap usually never changes backlash anyway.. That tone ring is reusable, hell i've had mine off several times.

Please re-read post #11. You'll understand it better. Tone ring wasn't that expensive anyway. I did have to adjust the shim pack thickness on each side to gain the proper backlash and preload.

I've reused them too, but ford rec replacement because they are flimsy. I've heard of the adapter you used on the dial indicator, but it sure looks funny in the picture setup that way since most work the other way!

WTG posting pics of the job and results!

Honestly I wish I had gone with a true trac instead of an eaton clutch type. I'm really not sure why I did at the time. They may have been newer in the 10.5 at the time and I was unsure of the reliability.
