there wasn't a lot of white smoke, no more than normal. I've been trying to get to the fuel filter for the past couple of days and can't get the black cap off. the cap has a couple of broken ribs on it like someone tried and broke pieces off the cap. Is there a secret that im missing to pulling that cap off?
I'm so close.
I'm gonna check the injector o rings first tomorrow.
use a big long screwdriver layed across the lid between the ribs to get it off. i had to do that a couple times with mine. some guys have made a special tool for them, but you usually shouldn't need one. pull the lid and change that filter! as long as that truck has been sitting it needs a new fuel filter, fuel, and clean the FPR screen before running it very long. you know it will run now so get that stuff changed out.
Some of the new filters come a new cap I think the last one I bought did, so you might not have to worry about destroying the old one. Check with the parts store though before you go ballistic on it. I get some Diesel Clean made by POWER SERVICES(grey jug) And fill the fuel canister half way or better then run it. Don't forget to clean the screen in there like the guys said.Keep going man!
Shouldn't you get the radiator and some antifreeze in it? I don't know how much these motors heat up around the cylinder walls and heads with out coolant in there. I may be way off though.
I have had problems with the caps leaking and spraying fule all over unless they are super tight. Because of this I wound up destroying them to get em off. If the tabs break off I drill a 3/8 hole in the cap so I got something to hammer on with a pice of steel rod I have a skrewdriver might work. All of the new filter are suposed to come with a cap. That change was supposed to go into effect a while back. Might just be with the nappa filters.
I put back the radiator a little bit ago. I finally got the cap off with the screwdriver, took a lot of muscle to get that off. the fuel filter is definiatly getting replaced, it needs it. I don't see a screen though, it's in the fuel bowl, right? I hope the guy before me didn't forget to put it back in.
I lost my screen. So I went to the hardware store and got a screen from the piece that screws into the end of a kitchen faucet. I had to trim it with a scissors to make it fit. $3 or $4 bucks I think.
replaced the filter and cleaned the screen and the truck runs a lot better, I think almost 100% normal.
I really appreciate your help. I'm a student here at CSU and this week is finals week so I really appreciate your patience with me.
I'll let you know hoe it drives.
If the pressure is low you can bring it up by shimming the FPR. There is a brass nut on the side of the fpr if you remove it and place a bb in it under the spring it will bring up the psi but I think 70 is the max so you might want to look into it. And if your pump is weak shimming might make it go out all together a littel sooner. If you replace the pump it is a bit of a pita so you might want to try the shim first.
If the pressure is that low with a 3/16 bb in something is not right. More than likely the pump. I would try to shim it some more and start looking into a pump.
So ends that saga.Great job man. what ever did you pay for that truck anyway? I remember you said it didn't run when you got it. Must have turned out to be a good deal. Don't forget to put some good cleaner in your tanks. Clean that old junk out of you injectors. Man, the guys on FTE sure know there stuff! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
