could be . Is the motor spinning ? In other words is the motor cranking and not starting or is the motor not making revolutions ?
If the motor is spinning and trying to start look at the tach and see if it is registering rpm's when the motor is spinning . If there is no register on the tach then the cps may be faulty .
I know on gas engines, the problem is fuel or electric related. is ti the same in this case as well?
Somewhat , fuel is what you need for a start up . There may be a hp oil problem also . When you crank the motor for a minute will it start smoking out the exhaust ? If it is not smoking out the exhaust after a few minutes of cranking then there is no fuel and thats the next step of diagnosis .

It is spinning but not starting. It also registers RPM's.
Should I test the combustion?

I did look for the exaust and didn't see any. I also didn't try for more than 10-15 seconds at a time.
How would I diagnose that? Check for fuel pressure? does hp mean high presure?
HPOP= high pressure oil pump. It is on the front of the engine in the valley. It supply's oil pressure to the injectors that are hydraulic and electric. The IDM "injector drive module" supply's the electric.
You might want to check out this book. It will help shorten the learning curve.
Its a little long on the download but very helpful. And its got pictures too! LOL...............Diesel Technician Society
The fuel filter housing is in the valley. It has a black plastic cap on it. You might want to take the cap off to see if it is full of fuel. And make sure the filter is ok. You can check the pressure at the shrader valve on the side of the housing. The valve is on the fuel pressure regulator.

which is on the driver side of the fuel bowl.
check the fuel bowl for fuel, drain it and pour good fuel in it if you haven't done so already and i would do the same with the tanks.
if your not getting white smoke its not getting fuel. that can come from several things. the IDM could be dead not firing the injectors, could have very low fuel pressure(should need 20psi or more to start, but we keep them in the 60-70psi range), could be low pressure by the HPOP. you can pull one of the plugs on the oil rail and build a mechanical guage with a high pressure hose that with a fitting that will screw into the oil rail(this tool would need to be able to read up to 4000psi with out leaking oil everywhere) and check while cranking. check the fuel pressure at the FPR using the schrader valve mentioned above while cranking. i wouldn't mess with the IDM yet. plug the truck in for a couple hours to allow it to warm the block up in case the GP's don't work and change the oil. i would even consider pull the oil out of the HPOP rez just b/c of how old the oil is and refill it with good oil. i would want as much of the old fluids out as possible. also you can pull the valve covers and check to see if the oil spouts on the injectors are popping oil out while cranking.
WOW, that's a load. Sounds like I'll be buisy for the next couple days Lol. thanks
I did an oil change today but I haven't replaced the oil in the HPOP rez yet, will do first thing. I also still need to do the fuel, that'll happen after HPOP rez. After that I'll test the HPOP pressure, I hope that's not to chalenging.
