gear case lube

Good morning SD owners,
Was wondering what you guys recomend using in the front and rear diffs on my 04 F250 6.0? I just turned 100k and would like to refresh both. I have heard that the front and rear take diferent lubricants. Is this true? I wouldn't mind running a synthtic lube if I can. Also are there gaskets on the covers? Reuseable? Also what are the capacities of each? Any and all info would be great.

I'm doing this from memory so you should check your owners manual. I believe the OEM gear oil is synthetic for both diffs.

I use Royal Purple Synthetic lubricants in everything on my X.

I did not add the little 4 oz. bottle of limited slip diff lubricant since Royal Purple said it was not necessary with synthetic gear oil.

Rear Diff - 75W-140 gear oil - approximately 3 quarts
Front Diff - 75W-90 gear oil - approximately 3 quarts

Rear diff cover has non reusable gasket. Don't know what front diff has. When I initially changed my rear diff oil, I used the black gasket maker sealer from Permetex. Good stuff and, if applied properly, will not leak.

I also used the black Permatex (oil/temp resistant). I used Mobil 1 in both my diffs (no need for friction modifier, it's already in there). About 2 1/2-3 qts in front and about 1 gallon (4 qts) in the rear. Neither diff has a re-usable gasket. Just make sure the area is clean and lay a bead of the black stuff around the mating surface (circling the bolt holes), let it skin up for about 20-30 minutes (some people will say that isn't necessary, but I'm old school), bolt it up, let it sit overnight and then fill 'er up and you should be good to go!

I just did this on my 350 below and used the appropriate Mobil 1 LS in each case. There are no gaskets so you will need the appropriate gasket material. I also replaced the rear end cover with the newer aluminum one from Ford that has fins on it to hopefully keep it cooler.
There are excellent write ups in the tech folder and here they are...

SRW rear diff

Front diff

On a side note the rear fluid in mine looked like a milk shake but the front looked almost new.
Also, I just did a 375 mile run down to the beach and got my best mileage to date (20.4 hand calculated!!!)

What they said...excellent input. I too used the '08 rear diff cover $45...worth the extra 20'F cooler temps than I had before...although some of that could be due to the gear lube changed as well. Went with Mobil1...as I do in almost any lubricating application in my garage. Pick up a couple of 5/16 x 18 studs (or make a couple by grinding off the bolts heads)...they came in pretty handing while lining up the bolt holes. I never let the Ultra Black gasket maker skin over....just made sure the new cover was warmed up first....I also used allen head screws with external lock washers...looks pretty clean this way. I also only torqued to 200 in lb, due to the new cover being cast alluminum.

Yeah, I just installed the MAG-HYTECH rear diff cover that increases the gear oil capacity from 3 quarts to 6 quarts. Has drain plug, dip stick, new stainless allen head bolts and imbedded "O" ring seal. A bit pricey ($245) but well worth the piece of mind and additional cooling when towing.

I'm going to get the Mag-Hytech front cover and install since I have never had the front diff cover off to see what things look like.

Yeah I looked long and hard at that. It sure is purdy as they say but I could not justify the upcharge. Hopefully I'll be alright.
If you intend to keep your truck for 250K I think the price would be justified
