Ok i was wondering what the best way to clean my engine is. I dont think powerwashing is a good idea because of the high pressure. What do all of you use and any special techniques that i need to know of? My buddy powerwashed his engine awhile back and it turned out to be a bad idea on his part as he had electrical issues afterwards. The reason i am doing this is i have developed a small ticking sound not sure what it can be but i dont want to get any derbis in my engine as i will be pulling valve covers and all that.
I tried power washing. Doesn't do alot with a greazy motor. Steam/hot water under pressure works better. If it gets in the dist, take off the cap and dry it out w/ paper towels.
A good degreaser is a must. Once you get it clean SIMPLE GREEN works great for keeping it clean. Full strength though. Don't dilute it. It works great on my chrome valve covers and aluminum intake. I just spray it on and rinse it off.

Wd-40 works great on a soggy dist. as well. Pop the cap spray a little in and you are good to go.
I've used a pressure washer before on an engine before, but you have to use some sort of degreaser and let it sit a while to cut the crud. What I did was cover the distributor and other electrical components with some old sheets of plastic. After cleaning it I grabbed my air compressor and blew off any remaining water that may cause a problem. Then took it for a test drive to make sure it didn't drown to death...lol.
You guys don't have hot water at your car washes? The ones around here have an engine degreaser setting (low pressure soap) and then you switch to either high pressure hot soap and then high pressure hot rinse.
greased lighting that you get at lowe's works great also the greased lighting walmart carries works real good used them on other vehicles. I cleaned the engines with that an one of those shower wands like walmart carries an a brush did not mess anything up on it.
I have had good luck with Gunk foaming degreaser. Drive to car wash let engine get warm, pull in and spray it down with the Gunk while it is still warm. I bag the dist cap, start it up and spray away. Works really good when hot and hot water to spray with. Of course I go there at night, the guy gets freaked out seeing you do it in the day.
