I am looking at a 2000 F-250 4x4 crew cab with 270k on it. I can get it for $6500. do ya'll think it is worth getting. The body is in ok shape and the inside is pretty dirty. The truck was used to pull a horse trailer. What do I need to look for on the engine side of it. I looked over the drivetrain and it looks good. It had a new trans about 100k ago.. Thanks.
Ok and dirty sounds like it might be overpriced. The miles and trailer don't scare me too much. The key will be maintenance. How well has the engine been taken care of? How often the fluids and filters changed? Unless the horse trailer was huge, these engines seem to do better when they're driven a bunch.
I'd start by removing the lid off the air filter and inspecting the lid and tube going back to the turbo for signs of dirt. If you can wipe your finger inside the intake tube and leave a clean streak, then I'd start to worry. Here's a link with some other things to look at https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...questions.html
What bothers me on these kinds of deals is that if the truck has not been taken care of on the inside do you think they would take care of the engine......It is hard to say but go with what Chris said and check it really good.
I bought my 2000 with 210k and I was not scared about it. Give it a good going over, ask questions, and see if there are any maint records. I bought my truck with no records and just my own experiance with engines and such. Ask questions, thats all you need to do. Check the oil quality and do a quick check of other fluid levels like diff and xfer case.
My truck was a base model with ac only, I paid less then 4k for mine. But have more then made up for the cheaper price in additional mods and maint upgrades.
Just bought my '99 2 months ago w/ 279k on it for $2500 and took about $1500 to take care of repairs. It was filthy but runs good. Was a fleet truck so it was maintained OK but rarely cleaned.
The mileage is not the scary part, its if it has had regular maintenance on it. Like Chris suggested, look at it good, ask questions. If its really dirty, see you can talk down the price.

I know some of the outfits in estes park. The big ones will way over load their trucks pulling 16 head to Craig and other places on the western slope. Check underneath for sludge / signs of leakage especially on rear end. Was it a auto or standard? Heavy loads are hell on the 4spd auto shifting from 2nd to 3rd on Colorado passes.
