It's been a lot of years now, but I recall my '50 having the speedo cable going through the floor, as shown, and that it had a sponge rubber grommet around the cable to seal the hole. I'll have to check the Merc next time I'm at the shop.
Re-looking at the post on the 48-50 Marmon Harrington F1 extended cab (that Lucas made a deal on) I noticed on the interior shot what looks like a speedo cable running down to the opening in the floor by the heater box:
The Merc has the speedo cable going through the hole in the firewall, along with the choke and throttle cables. Perhaps this was one of the many "5 star improvements" to the 51's. ;-)
I'll have to go lift my mats and check; I seem to remember a knockout in that location, but it's intact. The speedo drive is on the right (pass.) rear of the tranny on 3-sp's too. I think the key difference is that there is more room under a big-truck cab than on a F-1. Then again, mine could be wrong, but I ordered the grommet at the firewall and it was listed as a "choke/throttle/speedo grommet"
Ross I notice in the picture of your firewall that the location of your heater mounting points. How close is it to the glove box and do you have any pictures of the inside?
