I have the same problem. I've made a couple of trips to different parts stores and they keep giving me a 76" speedometer cable with the Pioneer brand part # CA-3011. I have a 78 F250 with a 400M with a C6. The first one would not plug in properly and the second came loose on the first corner that I turned. Certainly they make a cable that works better than what they're selling me.
It's funny that the Ford part is 73 1/4" long and the after market one that is not working is longer. Your after market manufacturers must not be building them quite right to make a good connection.
Here are the aftermarket part numbers for anyone who wants to give them a chance:
RockAuto: ATP Part # Y806 {#E6ZZ17260A}
Autozone: CA3011 (76")
OReilly: CA3011 (76")
Napa: Balkamp 6151625 (76")
I have a really dumb question. Why would turning a corner make a speedo cable come loose.
I don't know. I think that the after market cables do not have good connectors. We had a real hard time connecting it behind the speedometer with the speedometer out of the dash.
As soon as I got on the interstate, it stopped working (came loose). Crappy connectors?
I knew the part number looks nothing like your part number. That's what RockAuto is giving for the part number. Guess who's not buying the speedometer cable from RockAuto.
i bought the 118 incher from napa in october last year. havent had a problem with it yet in my 76. i think it was less than 30 bucks at the time i bought it.
Part number for the cable i used was 615-1628

Reason: added part number for speedo cable, was longer i guess
Ok the truck that I have has a 351M and it had a T18 manual with 4x4 and now it has the same 351M but it has an E4OD bolted to it and the transfer case that was on the
E4OD is also under there. I would only need like 4" for it to be long enough but that just doesn't cut it. It's a 1978 single cab long bed with a 4" lift on it.
