Just replaced my 2 piece rear main seal yesterday. dropped the pan after drooping the suspension pulled the rear main cap off and loosened the others up and removed the old seal and put in my new one. after i had cleaned everything up i went to install the oil pump so i took the hex oil pump rod and placed it up in the motor in the female end that it spins in and fanagled the oil pump up in place and got the other end of the rod in the oil pump. i started to tighten the bolts on the pump when the began to get hard to turn and it still had about 3/16" of room to tighten up well right then i heard a crack and a small piece of cast iron about the size of a dime came dropping down in the oil pan. i freaked! so i loosened up the bolts a little and turned the crank by hand and the oil pump rod was turning like it should with no problem not in loose or anything. i cranked the motor by hand a full revolution and everything seems fine.....the only thing i can think that happened is the rod had dropped out a little up in the motor and was sitting on the lip of the female end and when i was tightening it up it popped off a piece of the edge of the round hole it goes up in to the hex female receiver then the rod set itself back in the female end...
sorry if this is confusing. i ran out of time and had to be to work today so i finished tightening up the oil pump and everything, put on the oil pan and cranked the motor over by hand again. everything seems smooth and fine....does anyone think its safe to try and start it up and see if it'll work...i figure the piece is already broken so if it's something major im gonna need a new motor anyways....
i'll take a picture of it when i get a chance. i filled her up with oil and hoped for the best...turned it over and vrooom she started right up. good oil pressure and everything...then all of a sudden oil started pouring out from underneath the motor! whoops what did i do?? oil was shooting out from the filter...i shut it down and realized when i took off the old filter the old rubber gasket was still on the block and i put my filter over that...took it off and tried it again. The truck is running perfect i wiped up all the oil off the pan and frame rails...took her for a 20 min ride and everything seems good. Next time i'm going to pull the motor to do that seal...its a pain when theres dirt and mud dropping on you everytime you bump anything under the motor and your trying to keep everything clean.
i'll post up a pic of the piece when i get a chance..no wierd noises or anything so i might be allright...thats what i get for rushing.
