460 Oil Pan fix....

After finding what I think is a great deal on an Oil Pan kit from Amazon, $135 for the oil pan, gasket, dipstick, dipstick tube and new pick up tube, shipped. I finally had time to put the pan on, without pulling the motor as many said had to be done. I loosened the motor mounts, tranny mount and fan shroud and lifted the motor up enough to drop the oil pump into the pan. Pulled the old pan out, cleaned up the block and after swapping out the oil pick up tube, dropped everything in the new pan, put the gasket on along with 4 small wire ties to hold it in place and slid the pan into position, remounted the oil pump, tightened up the 23 bolts on the pan and 4.5 hours later fired it up with excellent oil pressure and that was it. There's no way I was pulling the motor, the dump has Central Hydrulics.
So my 92 F350 4x4 Dump is ready for the snow. The complete kit was a "Ford Racing Kit" everything fit perfect, even the dipstick tube, easily cleared the exhaust and the mounting hole was right on for the stud in the exhaust manifold. Again it was $135 shipped. Ford wanted $90 just for the dipstick tube, which failed right before the pan started leaking....

It wasn't anywhere as bad as it was made out to be, and after finding the kit for $135 I was happy. The same parts that I'm not sure if they were Ford was almost another $100 elsewhere online. Ford Dealer's price, even at cost was a joke.

Does not look like they sell one for a 302 on Amazon at least. Thanks a lot though!

About how high did you lift the motor? Have to unbolt exhaust? Does the pan have to come off to replace the dipstick?

Motor was raised about 2 inches, rather than deal with the manifold studs where the "Y" Pipe bolts are, we cut the section of pipe out that was in the way then used the 3" wide band clamps to reinstall, works perfect. No, you don't need to remove the pan for dipstick issues. The dipstick tubes are priced ridiculously high though. I paid about $40 more for the entire Ford 460 Oil Pan Kit, than the price of just the tube. If the pan isn't leaking yet, it will likely do so in the future. Buy the kit from Amazon, $135 shipped.

Where does you pan leak I have an 88 F350 RWD SRW 460 FI engine and pan has never leaked. Has been in my family since 88! The only issue I had was when I attempted to put on a high volume pump and discovered it hit the pan after I had it almost completely installed. The last 1/8 inch was no-go. Had to go back with a stock volume pump.

Did you need to drop the front axle at all? In other words, raise the tuck along with the engine?

Thanks. Nice to know I won't need to pull the engine to replace an oil pan...

I am in the process of doing this right now. The problem I am having is getting the pan all the way out. I have already removed the oil pump. The pan keeps catching on the motor mounts and the bottom of the crank.....now that I am thinking about it....the pan should be pulled out the front of the motor right?...i was trying to pull out the rear.

I have the transmission out right now getting rebuilt so I have alot of room.

You must have to jack it up farther then. The throttle body should hit the cab, and it will slide out the rear

But i see your trannys not in, probly cant jack engine up now

Just bought a new napa pump for 80 and new drive rod for 14. Lucky the truck came with a new ford pan. Still have to get dipstick tube

I am jacking the motor up from the front. That must be putting it at weird angle. The throttle body is all the way Against the cab
and the motor cannot be raised anymore. The front of the pan gets hung up on the motor mounts and crank. No wiggle room because of the crossmember and motor mounts. I will try to raise the motor from the rear.

Maybe the angle is different when jackng it up because you dont have your tranny in. When I did it, I didnt even unbolt the tranny mount

Yep that was it!..I used 2 jacks and the pan came right out. The angle was too great when lifting from the front only!......I just put a new pump also but I'm worried that I put the drive rod in ok up in the block. I put it on the pump first and then ligned up the bolts. I felt it bind a little as I tightened, so i turned the rod with an open end and it freed up the pump. I tightend the bolts down easily after that.
