i have a 95 f-350 460, zf5, 50k on motor 1500 on new tranny.
just put in a motor with 50k miles on it, runs and idles perfect yet while driving and as soon as i put it into 3rd and give it some gas it makes this grinding noise. doesnt matter what rpm its at it makes the same noise once i get above half throttle. i can def hear it when im in 5th though, once i let off the throttle the noise goes away. timing is good fuel seems good, spark is def...no misses...no codes. oil pressure is nice, doesnt over heat. i think it might be the fuel injectors. i cant decern were the sound is commin from other than i can hear it through the shifter boot goin down the road caus my boot isnt screwed down yet. everything is hooked up properly. any ideas to what this could be. thanks
First check heat shields, look for any that are bent, loose, or have rocks on them. My second thought is a wheel bearing or a spindle bearing. Check wheel bearings by looking for play. Check the spindle bearings by locking in your hubs, a bad spindle bearing will get much louder when your hubs are locked. Good luck.
My car has a similar problem right now. It sounds EXACTLY like something is grinding. My first thought was "Oh great, my axle is broken or my transmission is going out." But no, simply an exhaust in need of repairs.
Check anything that can rattle. You might try getting it to do it parked. Run it through some RPM's and if you can get it to make the sound, get a buddy to look around for you.
thanks, ill check that out, i know my exhaust is crappy. gutted the cat and havent welded it back up, got rearended by a drunk driver and it munched part of my dual exhaust lol but my ball and reciever totaled his lexus lmao. also if a fuel injector is making a ticking noise does that mean its going bad, when i was putting the motor back together they looked prestine.
i checked my timing today it was at 12 degrees and i retarded it to 10 and the sound lessened so maybe it was a pinging noise, i also think it has to do with my crappy autolites and wires/cap n rotor. but it feels like i have more power now. sounds not gone but has lessened.
