clicking noise under load

traveling from Ak to DC via Phoenix towing a 27' trailer - just before we hit Las vegas i did have it overheat once, lost some coolant - let it set a little and no problem - found out my reservoir cover was bad, had no more issues with coolant - i only said that just in case my issue may be related. I noticed the clicking noise mostly when i back off the throttle and coasting. i pulled into Las Vegaas, let it sit a little, unhooked the trailer and took it for a spin, never heard the noise. Soon as i hooked up in the morning instantly heard the noise. Ford wouldn't look at it when i was heading south, which i figured. We headed out with no problems besides the noise and it was probably the worse part of drive yet with 100 degree heat and biggest mountain we crossed yet. made it to PHX and unhooked - took it for a spin in the morning, heard no noise until i almost made it back to the house when I started hearing it - it seems to make the noise when its up to temperature - this EX (2005, 6.0 - 52K) is from Fairbanks in extremely cold temps. I dont know if its just the heat, maybe the thermostat is set too high (even if possibility). Rig seems to run great, no leaks but just a ticking noise. I heard it once even when i was in neutral and revved it up.
One other thing is I had a hypertech programmer installed at stage 3 - i have uninstalled it and it still makes the noise (thought maybe that could have been a cause).
It almost sounds like in the older days when transferring data on the computer, that little noise my puter made. thought maybe something like a can or coins vibrating, but def not it.

Any suggestions?

clicking noise don't know may be turbo, relay, belts pully but i do know you need gauges and a coolant filter something like the Edge Insight or Scangauge II with all that heat you need to know what your motor temps are because the gauges on the dash are a joke when they move it is 2 late.

thinking turbo myself, I dont know much about them so no clue. i have been watching gauges like a hawk and caught that one right off before it got too hot- i just brought it back from a shop here in AZ (like a Midas I guess), they weren't too sure but mentioned turbo and didn't want to tear into it which i didn't want them to. On the way home, i noticed its more predominantly noticeable while i was in the Tow/Haul mode (no trailer attached).

Ticking noise might also be the HPOP. I have heard that said, but not seen it personally.

I'm thinking injector cackle since it's happening when you back of the throttle and coast. My truck does it a lot and always has. I'm not sure there's anything you can do about it.

My 2006 E350 Chateau van was making a “ticking” noise under load that I believed to be an injector, but I don’t know for sure. I began adding 2 stroke oil to the fuel at each fill up and the noise became quieter during the first tank full and went away completely during the second tank full. I continue to use it with good results.

I add one quart of two stroke oil per tank full. The van tank holds 35 gallons and a fill up is usually close to 30 gallons. So your very close to one once per gallon. The ratio isn’t critical.

I use the Super Tech brand from Wal-Mart. It comes in a blue gallon jug for 10 to 11 bucks a gallon. It is the ash less spec two stroke oil with TW-C3 on the label. I think they all meet that spec today, but check to be sure if you use another brand. Also beware of other products at Wal-Mart that come in identical blue jugs.

I have also used the two stroke oil while also using Diesel Clean fuel additive with good results. I’m also using it in my 7.3 truck.

You might give it a try and see if it helps.

Thanks for responding - what is HPOP? and adding 2 stroke, is that a common practice for normal driving or only if you are having an issue?

The HPOP is the High Pressure Oil Pump that develops the high pressure necessary to operate your injectors. It is in a addition to the oil pump that lubricates the engine.

A lot of people are using two stroke oil in their fuel to help replace some of the lubricity lost in modern low sulfur fuel. This is done as more of a preventative than a cure. I have read other reports of engines becoming quieter when it is used. You can read of people using it in most diesel forums. Search for threads here about it for more information.

I also use it in my four stroke gasoline motorcycle, but for a different reason. I was doing this before I began using it in my diesels.

FYI - may not exactly fit, but here it is anyway .......

Excursions built after 1-10-05 and 2005/06 F-SuperDuty may have a metal tapping noise from the rear of the engine on decel or light acceleration, or under loads when the high oil pressure is at higher levels. This may be due to a damaged/improperly fitting HP oil pump output quick connect fitting. To diagnose, you will need a scan tool with active command capability. Command the IRP duty cycle to 45% and listen at the high pressure oil pump cover with a stethescope as the engine speed is increased to 2800 RPM. If the noise is louder on the pump cover than on other parts of the engine, the pump cover will need to come off to inspect and replace the fitting. Broadcast Message 5511.

hmm, this kinda sounds like it with the exception of metal, doesnt seem like metallic to me, kinda like two computers chatting back and forth (weird)- not sure of oil pressure going up because gauge never moves - but like mentioned earlier, stock gauges aren't great. I took it in to Dana Bros here in Mesa and he took the time testing everything with his code checker (sure there is a name for it)- nothing came up and when we went for drive we heard the noise, but nothing he has ever heard or had a good idea what it was - so I will be off here next week with the trailer for MS for the fourth and then up to VA - put my tuner back to stage 1 and see how that works out, thanks for all the info, and will keep checking for any more.

The dash gauge has nothing to do with reading high pressure oil pressure. The HPO pressure runs from 500-4000 psi and fires the injectors. It's read by the ICP sensor. The dash gauge is for lubrication oil pressure and it's really nothing but an idiot light with a needle as almost all the dash gauges are. It only takes 7.5 psi to register normal when actual engine lube oil pressure is ~70 psi.
