I don't know if an FICM would affect anything, but I can say that my exhaust smell changes a lot depending on whether I'm warmed up, city driving, long highway driving, etc. At worst it is a very acrid smell, and that's when it's been stop and go around town or idling. At best it smells as clean as a propane burning warehouse engine, and that's after I've been running the interstate and the cat is hot and doing it's job.
So maybe just the fact that it was in the shop for work would temporarily change the exhaust smell???
I assume Ford did the FICM? Do you mind if I ask what they charged, as mine is going in Wed for probably the same thing. Did you also get the newest flash? Again, I assume you would have. Thanks- Tim

Yes Ford did it, and it din't cost me anything, (warrenty) but the service rep did say it was about $1,000 worth of work. Also all flashes are current as of yesterday.

I don't really kno how to describe the smell, all I can say is it seems differant, maybe clearner smelling.? I am in no way complaining about it either, I think the FICM was faulty when I bought the truck in May, because now she gets up and moves even when cold. Before it was slugish untill warmed up a bit. I am seeing less smoke now to, which might contribute to the differant smell.

Thanks for the reply. Mine will be out of my pocket
Mine is being replaced next week. Mine smells like a school bus lot. I would guess your gonna get better milage as your acually useing all the fuel. Mine has slowly lost about 3 mph as it stinks worse and worse. LOL (My mechanic is doing it for 835.00, local dealer wands 1350.00)

Reason: add information
as odd as it may seem yes the ficm can change the smell of the exhaust. As ficms fail you may notice more smoke and a decress in milage per/gallon.
this comes in to play as the ficm is what controlls the injector coils. if incorrect voltage is applied the mfds (mass fuel diseried) will change and go up to try to compinsate for incorrect voltage to keep the truck running.
so higher voltage means less fuel and better use of the less fuel.
I like hearing that my miliage should increase. Since I bought the thruck I have averaged about 15.5 miles per gallon. I will be intersted to see what it might change to. Hopefully for the better. I will keep you posted.
I also have noticed the fuel smell, and it has been a PIG on fuel for @ a month! Come on Wed! Anxious to see how well it will run as it has been going downhill rapidly. I hope it makes it to Wed, lol!
At what milage are the ficm's starting to fail? I have 50'+++ on my wifes EX and just wondering if there is a failure pattern. Had the latest up dates installed last wensday and truck seems to run and pull good after 1200 miles of towing 26' trailer. I also installed water filter from wwwdieselsite.com before leaving so we will see How it works! The truck seems to start better after the updates too, it seems to "crack" sharper when it lights off.
It's probably hard to say. My truck has 86000 on it and like a stated earlier I think it had issues even when I bought the truck. It just wasn't untill the really cold weather arived (below freezing) that I really started to seen some issues. I head back to work this week so we will see how it does during the upcoming cold weather this week. The highs and lows this week are going to be around 35/15. Yay!
The former ford mech now on his own doing mine stated 120k to 150k. If I understand it correctly the inductive heating tempature range was changed from the originial design. I would conclude that here in NE it would opperate more than say AZ? thus causing them to fail early?
Mine failed at 134,000 miles and cost me about $1001 to replace and reflash everything. The FICM was $650 and $280 labor cost. Don't know if this is a fair price but after getting hit with $2900 to replace two injectors at 124,000 miles decide to stay away from the local dealership. The mechnaic I took it to said when the weather starts to get cooler, he begins to see FICM failures.
