The SM said they have to replace alt first before they can nail down anything else. Best case, they replace it and the rest goes away. My luck I'm in for alt, FICM and 4 injectors. Merry F'in Christmas to me
Tim - would you consider doing the repairs yourself? I believe the instructions in the Tech Folder on injectors are pretty good. Also I have a few extra tips and I know the Techs here, and Brickie also, could walk you through it. If you want to do injectors, you can do an entire side for less than the dealership would do one injector. The FICM and alternator are easy. As you know, you can get a used FICM at PHP.
my truck goes to the ford dealer atleast 5 to 6 times a weeks.
Now to awnser the question... its very hard to diag an injector with bad batteries, bad ficms and bad alternator. The one exception is if the coil is at ambent temp (read that as cold soak) and the coils dont ohm out. so all injector repairs need to be addressed after good voltage is established.
Right- thats what the SM said. I'm OK with that, warranty company covered some of the alt so $200 out of my pocket. Now today. 3:30 I finally get a call. Tech feels like it needs #6 and 8 injectors, $700 for 2 and thats NOT installed! And he doesn't know if it will still need FICM until after that... Rough numbers I'm looking at @$2k! So, my thinking is when he calls tomorrow AM - the tech doesn't know which route he is going to take yet -I'm going to politely tell him go ahead and do the FICM with the newest flash, and I will do the injectors, if and when it needs them. Heck, I can get a whole set of aftermarkets for a few hundred more, right? I CAN'T do the FICM, am I crazy in this thinking? My last name isn't Rockefeller, ya know? But I will keep the old FICM and get it fixed, or try to fix it myself, and have a spare. Right? What do the techs think?
just an fyi you will be charged 100 for the ficm core if you want it back. also injectors or not to bad to install you can do a set of 8 in less then 4 hours if you have done a few. if not it will take youa day. still worth the savings.
Would you say that I'd be OK doing the FICM and new flash, and I could do the injectors myself? Or is this a hairbrained idea? I can't really afford this right before Xmas. I have off the whole week betw. Xmas and New Year, I could do the injectors then if I had to, and it wouldn't matter if it took me more than a day. And no, I've never done them but I AM mechanically inclined, and I also have some friends that could help including a buddy that is former Land Rover tech and currently is with Toyota. I trust him, plus he had an 03 6.0 but just traded in on 09 F150.
D8chumley,
Did you check the 48v side of the FICM? It should be checked with engine cold and running. If less than ~ 42 volts you should open it up and resolder it. This is a free fix and no programming needed. Then check the injectors, you might be surprised the injectors might not be bad.
Yes, Sat. Key on, @47v cranking dropped to 21ish then back up to 36ish then to 45ish IIRC, thats why I figured it was the FICM. Also tested alt, showed 14.1v. I told Ford SM this, and when they got it in thats when all the rest started. I didn't feel comfortable at that time to attempt the fix, but in hindsight maybe I should have. I just didn't want to have a dead truck in my garage if I fouled it up then I'd be screwed. I'm waiting to see what the dealer has to say, they're going to call me tomorrow AM and see what they think the next step is. Thanks for the replies!
It is an easy fix! You are not messing with the computer board, just the power supply board. If you have done any soldering before than it is easy.

Fix the FICM yourself before you try a reflash( I did the EX last week and it is a different truck now)it is very easy, the injectors too can be done at home.Common Tim live a little, get those mits dirty buddy.
Its at the dealer. I should have listened to you, Tony! I should have tried fixing the FICM, but too late now. I'm def. going to do the injectors if it needs them, $700 for 2 injectors not even including installation is , well, a bit much! I ain't skeered!
