Legalities of a Cab Swap

Anyone who has done this before? Im buying a cab to switch out with the one on my truck and ive been told different things on how to go about it. Merging the titles, switching the vin, and using the title from the new cab but i figured i would ask to see what someone who has done this before did.

So if anyone can help that would be awesome.

Very simple. Put the new cab on and put the vin from the old cab in place of the new cab vin and remove the door jam sticker. Dont tell anyone the cab has been replace and no one will know

That or if the new cab has a title just use that as your title

Yes but if the new cab is from a different wheel base truck, different engine, different trans,Different model(150-250-350) Different body style,2wd vs 4wd you will raise all Kinds of flags.

legal

I plan on doing what Brad suggested when I put a modified frame from a parts truck (with no title) underneath my current titled and registered '65.

I would use the vin and title from the new cab. I don't think there is anything "illegal" in doing that, unless there is a rule that if more than 50% of the truck is changed, then something has to be done.

People add 4wd to their trucks all the time, take rusted bed off and make flatbeds, turn them into dumptrucks, roll backs, etc. There is nothing in the vin that will trigger a flag about the mech equipment of the truck.

But, peeling the vin off one cab and transferring it to another cab IS illegal and is specifically spelled out in the law.

Everyone thinks all this is just to annoy regular people trying to do legitimate fix up or build up of their vehicles. But it's the crooks in the world that have caused all this. If you have a old cab in the backyard with a good title, you can easily clean a good stolen truck up and get it titled by peeling the vin tag off the old cab and putting it on the stolen truck. And it may joe blow trying to avoid the bank repossessing his truck by doing the same thing. The banks are crooks too right?

It's still going to look like a 65 correct? The vin is on the cab, so you have nothing to worry about. Just keep it as is.

I know in new jersey, if you replace the cab or change the frame(and you disclose that info) you have to get a reconstucted title severly devaluing the value. And then you have to go to a specialized state inspection center to have the truck gone over.(MAJOR PAIN IN THE ***)

I am sure every state is different, but like i said in my first post, just swap the vin into the new cab and no one can prove it is not original

Call your DMV and explain to them what you plan on doing and see what they say.

Well. it looks like none of our "solutions" are technically legal. But no way would I call the DMV and tell them what I am doing. Like was said before, what a can of worms that would be.

Why not? You don't have to tell them your name or anything. They are the ones to ask.

Restorer shops do sell those 'special' hex rivets. I had to repair a dash on another car and took the VIN out and put it back in and they never noticed on inspection. I'd call your DMV and not use your name to get some answers. Titling it as the new cab would be easiest. I do not think anyone would notice, but it is a crime to remove VIN plates without the paperwork.

sorry it took so long to get back to this thread, but i dunno. I wont be getting rid of the truck, its a keeper.

Thought about just doin it renegade style and swapping the vin plate and peelin the sticker of the inside of the door.

But i guess just calling the dmv wouldnt hurt if i dont give them any of my info. If they ask tell em its a chevy lol.

ill post back what they tell me when i get a chance to call them. Thanx guys
