Before I installed the HPX, my truck had really bad "romps" in the mid 40's. Since I installed the HPX there has not been an issue even as low as mid twenties. I'll see how it acts when it starts to get cold.
What you are saying makes total sense to me. Just seems to me that a lot of the newer vehicles don't have this problem. When I told my Dad about the "romps" ; he acted like I had two heads! (He has a 2002 7.3 with 200k)
I have a 1999.5 and never had the romps on any kind of oil.
Why does my truck not experience the romps in the low twenties and the OP is experiencing the romps in the low fifties? We're both running 15W40 dino oil. Doesn't sound like an oil issue, sounds like an electrical/mechanical issue. Maybe thinner oil masks the electrical/mechanical issue, IDK.
Do you drive it every day? Mine (so far this year anyways) only romps if I don't run it for a day or two. During the week I haven't had any romp issues.

Yes, it's our main work truck for our business. When I bought it, it had dino oil in it and it never romped in the single digits or teens that winter.
I ONLY got romps with Delo dino. Never romped on Rotella (dino or syn). But I'm sure there are folks here that don't get romps with tunes *and* dino oil. Who knows if the the base tuning affects this -- it would be interesting to see that in a poll. I would also think that a slightly boogered up IPR would aggravate the romping with thick oil. Maybe someone getting them at warmer temps could try out an IPR change. I run syn oil, and won't go back anymore, so I'm out of the experiment... LOL
