'68 Fairlane 302 Hp Build
Planning on rebuilding my 302 out of my Fairlane 500 pretty soon but I'm seeing articles that say they can produce 400hp naturally asp and on pump gas. 400hp would be great but I'd like this to be a reliable setup. Not intending on it being a daily driver but could be possible in the future. Anyone got any input on a good, reliable 302 hp build in detail. I can handle a budget of about $1500-2k for parts not including machine work. Thanks for any info!

Stock 302 heads flow about 120cfm and there is no way they will ever flow as well as those AFR heads even professionally ported. With a 302 it takes 6000rpm to move enough air to produce that much hp, you could use a different cam to move the powerband lower but the peak HP will also be lower.
300hp is about what you get from a 9:1 302 with ported stock or GT40 heads and a 0-5000rpm cam.

does anyone have a 302 w/ AFR heads on it? I've seen a few articals where people say it's not possible. I don't see why not but I'm no expert. Thats why I'm talkin to you guys. I've still gotta plan for how I'm gonna hook up that kinda power anyways. I'm planning on just building my C4 Trans and then swapping out my axle (want a 9") at some point after I get it running and see how it performs. It won't be going to the strip but I'll still want traction for when I get on it every now and then. I guess traction bars.

I say RHS makes better heads than AFR and cheaper

Well i would prefer using a head that I know someone else has tried. I'm not familiar w/ RHS but what I like about them already is that they offer cast heads. I wasn't bent on going w/ aluminum b/c i'm not concerned w/ weight as much as I am reliability and cost. Have you run RHS heads Deve?
