injectors getting louder???

hey, I have stock injectors and I've heard people talking about when they turn on their DP the injectors get louder. Well, mine does that, I figured its because they are working harder or something. Well for the past week, I have noticed my injectors getting louder on stock. On top of it, I was sitting at a light the other day and the noise changed a little to a "clanking" like a first gen almost , then I gassed it and it was gone. But the loudness is still there and constant. I have always had a little variations in my idle. I don't know.?? Is this injector O rings? or injectors themselves? Thanks for help.

A couple comments: A change in injector sound when changing tunes is completely normal. The custom tune is calling for different ICP at idle than stock. I have a few different types of tunes and the idle is VERY different between them, which is due to having kind of big hybrid single-shots.

Also, colder temps will cause them to be a bit louder, especially at start up. But once it's fully warmed up, it should sound like it's normal self. If not, you might try pulling the valve covers and re-torquing evenrything. That can also quiet things down some.

Last thing- has your fuel changed in any way? I know that when I run high bio blends my engine was quieter. I haven't tried any bio since the injector change, so I don't know if singles do the same thing or not.

Well, the temp might have a little to do with it since I'm up in atlanta right now for thanksgiving. But back home I was already noticing it getting louder. The only thing I can think of is.. I changed my straight 5" to a 4" magnaflow with a muffler. which would change my backpressure. It was about this time I started noticing different noises? I just didn't know if it was Coincidence. has anyone else had something similar?

Could it be that quietening the exhaust made you notice the injectors a little more? For myself I notice the injectors on my 97 are much louder in the economy setting than in the tow settings. An HPX crossover line might, and I say might, quieten the injectors a little. Synthetic oil can quieten them too a little.

Here they are starting to switch to winter blend. I know Winter Blend is drier, so mine is louder in the Winter too. Just a thought.

The little variation in your idle is probably due to injector O-rings from what I've learned when I had that problem. I still haven't swapped the O-rings, but I did install a Riffraff hard HPX line and the problem all but went away.
On the injector noise, yes they will be louder in a tune for the reasons Izzy explained. I don't think the exhaust changed caused any problems for you, maybe they just seem louder now with the different exhaust. As long as the rig is running good, I wouldn't be too worried.

Ditto here, louder on 80E than 40 tow.

Your engine sound gets different probably because the fuel intake to the engine is changed either in quantity or timing or both. That might change the combustion characteristics. I doubt anyone can hear the injector sound difference from the standpoint that it is under the valve cover and under the hood.

My injectors are louder when the fuel tank is low. I assume it is because of air.

Low fuel pressure or low fuel volume can be the cause of noisey injectors. Has performance diminished since you have noticed noisier injectors?

I can DEFINTIELY hear mine change. Some of my tunes call for 700psi at idle, and others call for a stock 550ish. They are much louder with 700psi on them.

Talked to someone at Beans, IIRC and they didn't think it was very easy to tell what the injectors sound like over the engine noise. You can tell what the total sound of the engine is but the injectors buzz is overshadowed by the engine combustion noise. I haven't witnessed any Powerstroke injectors on a test bench but from the gas engines I have had and watching them test my injectors, I can only guess that the powerstrokes will also buzz.

I can definitly here the sound of my injectors between switching tunes, from stock up to 120, they get louder with the flip of the dp buttons when I go up then the injector noise clatter goes down as I go back to stock. I think your all right from what the guys say. Run some synthetic oil and they'll run real smooth.

Everybody says they can hear the injectors change sound. Nobody has yet told me how they distinguish between the injectors that are under the VC and inside the engine compartment with sound muffling material around it. So how does anyone distinguish it by ear? How do you separate the buzzing of the injectors from the explosions going on in the engine?

IOW, how do you separate the injector buzzing from the combustion noise of the engine with just the ear when they are occurring simultaneously (for all practical purposes)?

I think what Mike meant is that going from stock to a tune with a DP chip, you can hear a change in the amount or type of noise coming from that big hunk of iron under the hood.
