I have an '00 Expedition. When I start it everything seems normal. When I move the shifter to Reverse the Engine turns off. It's not like a studder and die type of turning off it's a quick sudden hard couple studders and off. If I move shifter to Neutral bypassing Reverse it will stay started. Moving it to drive will cause the engine to run slightly rough. Not really bad but enough to make it lunge a little while holding the brake down. Move it back to Neutral and engine runs good again. Move it to Reverse and it stops almost immediately. This did not come on slowly and progressively get worse. This didn't give me any problems at all and then all of a sudden yesterday this starts. No "Check engine light" on so no codes. I need help here. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
Your torque converter lock-up is constantly engaged. This is the equivalent of shifting into reverse with a manual tranny and popping the clutch at an idle. it could be one of the lock-up circuit wires has shorted to ground or the lock-up solenoid inside the tranny is frozen in the on position.
So how do I figure out which? Is this internal to the transmission and going to have to be looked at by someone who works on transmissions? I was really hoping to fix this myself by it being some sensor or something. LOL.
I would also try giving it some pedal as soon as you shift into gear. Not a lot, but enough to crack the throttle blade open. This would rule out the IAC. You will need to apply pedal quickly enough that the engine doesn't die. If it dies anyway you can rule the IAC out.
