Charging problem

'85 F250, 4x4, 460cid. I've replaced the alternator and the regulator, yet when i start the truck, the ammeter "bounces" like a ping-pong ball from side to side, all the way to the internal stops. Any ideas?

Have you measured the voltage at the battery, both with engine off and it running?

I would guess either you have a wire misplaced or the regulator is bad. The overvoltage relay is going bananas.

I assume the regulator has a bar plug that is fool proof so look at the alternator wires. If you are sure you have those wires correct then try another regulator.

I once went through three before I had one that worked.

Update: tried 5 different vr's, didn't fix the problem. checked the harness going from the alternator to the vr, and it looked like s**t, so I decided to look for a different one. The only one I could find locally was from a '86 with internal vr. Bought a "75 amp" reman from Auto Zone, and with the "new" harness, the problem is solved. Thanks for the help and advice.
