OK, what's the easiest way to roast chestnuts? Someone gave me a bag of them, I tried this in the oven once, made the X's to let out steam and some of them still blew up in the oven and made a real mess.
thats all I do, i check them every couple minutes. when the part where you cut the x starts to curl you can eat them. They dont take real long to make.:-)
I saw guys on the street in the UK roasting them on the top of a steel drum. Looked like they just had a small to medium fire and put the chestnuts on top of the drum and stirred them around. I think they did use some oil. If I recall right they had a papery skin on them that you peeled off before eating. They weren't very good, kind of scorched.
I suppose you could try this in a fry pan on the range with some butter or oil.
What kind of chestnuts are you roasting ? The better tasting kind, american chestnut ( Castanea Dentata ) is almost extinct. They are very hard to find. The chinese chestnuts ( Castenea Mollisima ) are everywhere, but supposedly don't taste as good. DF
Uh, if you want to see a REAL explosion, place just one unopened chestnut in the microwave and turn the power on! For decades, my family has roasted chestnuts on the stove. The only way to go.
I dont know, I just poke them, put them in a bag, then put them in the microwave and push like 1 min then leave it on for awhile, it does a good job of raosting them
