My rear brakes have locked up on me a couple of times in the last few days. They only do it once or twice the first couple of times I us the brakes after the truck has been sitting all day or over night. The two days it did it have been raining. I have a 1993 F250 4x4 ext cab with the double calipers up front, my ABS light has NOT come on, but does light up for a second when start the truck to show that it isn't burnt out.
Im guessing maybe I have a leaky wheel cylinder, or could it be a leaky axle seal, i have the full floating rear axle with trac loc, and not really sure on where that seal is, and if it would leak into the rear drum???
Or is it the Rear anti lock system not kicking in right away???
haven't had a chance to pull the rear wheel off yet, working, raining dark, another sweet winter in Vancouver.
I had the same issue with my 92 f-250 ext cab 4x4. turns out that weak brake shoe return springs were the problem , local Napa salesman says it is a common problem .
On these full floating axles, a leaking wheel seal is a very likely problem. Get oil on the drum and shoes, and they lock up real easy. You dont even need to pull the wheels off to check and see. Once the grounds dry, crawl under the truck, and on the bottom of the backing plate will be a small rubber plug. Pry the plug out w/ a small screwdriver, and then with a flashlight you can look into the drum. If things look all shiny and slimy, Either the wheel seal or brake cyl is leaking. Then you will need to pull the drum off and find out which
It may be a leaking axel seal if it is it will be obvious. When i was having the same problem the axel seals and brake cyl were good. I changed the shoes NO FIX. had drums turned NO FIX. disconected the parking brake cables NO FIX,replaced all of the brake springs FIXED the problem. All i am saying is do not discount the often ovelooked Spring. Good luck
Thanks, when I get a dry day I'll take a look for leaky fluids , if no sign I'll change the stings. I did it last tine I replaced me rear brakes on my '70 Torino and it made a world of difference. Thanks for the advice

Springs huh? I will have to check into that also. Mine lock up the first few stops as well and its worse when it rains. It makes me worry when it comes to snow season where traction is not so good.
