I have a 04 (11/03) with 145k and no problems except some a/c and ground strap issues, bone stock except for a coolant filter and ccv reroute. not sure why most people want a tuner as I have never had the need for one with this truck. just my 2 cents. Leave it alone, put some dollars in the bank when you can and enjoy your new truck...Read more in the tech folder and dont worry to much about some of the posts. remember, most come here when they have a problem to get help (which this site is awesome for) and few of us brag about how good or trucks are....
I've done a few things to my '03(see sig), including a 4" MBRP turbo back exhaust and SCT X-Cal 2 with Spartan tunes. I bought it about three years ago with 60K and have 103K on it now. I've had minor stuff like the fan clutch and I just did the brakes but no HG issues yet. If you do the mods but don't abuse it you should be fine. Down the road I may have the engine pulled and have it rebuilt with ARP studs and a few other goodies, maybe once it's paid off and I have some cash to play with......
I dont care what anyone says facts are that guys who have tuners will have heads lift, EGR coolers crack, Fuel pumps break, rods thrown etc a lot more than guys that dont have mods.
Anyone who has a tuner and says "I've been trouble free" has either gotten lucky, or is a liar, or is that one guy who "REALLY" does use his tuner for just gas milage and dosn't race around.
I guess I have pretty much talked myself out of doing the tuner thing as I have been doing nothing but research online about it tonight. I am thinking it isnt realy worth the risk if all I am after is gas mileage.
I am still considering the 4" exhuast with cat removed as I think this might be helpful in lowering egt and give better gas mileage. I honestly havent made up my mind about that.
One other mod I noticed in this forum that I would love to have is those 08 mirrors. I was pricing those online and I guess that made my mind up for me. Other than ebay I havent found any for under a grand.

ps: just by two cents, change oil often and use the cetane booster. Under load the stock HG do seem to blow on the 6.0L so you will need to do the ARP studs someday.
Your not the only one. Not only am I concerned about getting a deisel truck, I'm equally concerned about getting a Superduty. I'll have to wait and see how the 2011's turn out.

But why on earth does getting a SD concern you? You already have a fleet of Fords in your sig, so you know the quirks and tricks. The SD is a very solid platform for hauling and towing, if that's what you need.
The diesel vs gas question is a tough one. But if you really don't need the daily towing power of the diesel, gas probably make more sense. If you are working it hard and towing hauling a bunch day-in, day-out, then a diesel is probably better for you.

Great question. Over the past two years I've been reading on this forum about poor quailty hub / bearing assemblies, rust issues and basically one thing after another.
I don't need the deisel although it would love to have one so the gasser would be the choice.
living in Hampton, VA you are not going to have a rust issue, as far as hubs are concerned if you leave it with the stock size tires/rims and service your parts that will last a long time. Lifting the truck, running oversized tires puts the extra wear on the front end.
