2001, F250, Overhead display ????

Ok...so call me stupid or dumb...whatever....

Bought this 2001, F250, 4x4 a number of months ago. As with most older trucks, of course it had no owners manual in the glove box. So I got questions... although I have fumbled around until I figured some things out. Certainly a lot different than my old 1995 model.

Can anyone tell me what the push buttons on the overhead display are for ? I have pushed them.... but nothing happens... no lights show on the display, IF that is a display. This truck has manual locking hubs... was the overhead for automatic hubs ?

Any one have pictures ? out of manual on this ?

Thanks for your help !

Bill

The hubs worked automatically off of the 4x4 selector **** via vacuum, like the a/c **** selecting the different air output locations.

The overhead has no bearing on any of the functions of the truck itself. Consider it as an information center thingy only. The left overhead button is the mode button for the display. It scrolls between outside temp, average MPG, miles to empty, and off. The right button changes "units". It switches between english and metric, ie, miles/kilometers, degrees F/C, etc.

As far as why it isn't working, I won't be much help. I would check common issues, ie fuses, etc. The overhead cover is a snap on cover, although it is very tight and it will seem that your going to break it before it gives up. After you get the cover off, it should unscrew and unplug easily for replacement.

HTH

there are a few very good write-ups on the overhead display. One button selects from temp/mileage/off and the other eng/metric. 99% chance yours has the same solder issue as everybody else. They are normally a very easy fix if you are handy with a small solder iron. Just do a search for overhead display and there is a step by step direction with pictures on how to fix

You've got a bad overhead display, and as already mentioned it probably can be repaired. There is a thread in the tech folder I believe that explains it, and you can search FTE for others.

You can also work with this guy to either repair, or replace it:
Retrofit Ford F150, F250, F350 Overhead Console Kits
Go to the very bottom of that page, and he sells repair instructions. But I think it is the same info you can find right here at FTE for free.

You need to download owners manuals. They are free online here:
http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdi...pageid=&gutsid=

and also here:
https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp

You can also buy copies of the original glove compartment manuals. I think it is nice to have the actual booklets and little pouch for them. Much better than keeping a huge printout in your truck. You can get those here:
Helm Incorporated: Choose Product Category

Just pulled out the circuit board.... and two of the 680 diodes or whatever fell out... luckily I managed to find them on the floor board. Geezzzz I'm a blind old man... this is going to be a task for me tomorrow. Haven't ever soldered anything that small, I'll need a magnifying glass ! lol

You guys are great ! Now if I can manage the electronic tech stuff !

It's not that bad. Just a little heat and solder and you're in good shape. Since you found these yourself, I'd say you're ahead of the game. Instructions on how to do the overhead console fix are here: 1999 Ford F350 4x4 - Overhead Console Repair
