Question Maybe EGR O-Ring?

To start I am a heavy diesel tech. Detroits 6V92's, and 8's, MTU 2k's and 4k's mainly marine so I like to think I know a little bit about a diesel enine. However this engine I have never worked on. my engine in question is my 04 6.0. First i know all the info on the truck is at the bottom in my signature but anyways she has about 105k right now. I came home to the truck after it sat for a few days and found coolant on the ground under the truck. Got out my creeper and flashlight and went to town found just a few little drops hanging from the trans cooler lines obviously falling from above. Engine cold would get a drop every 3-5sec. Then started fearing head gasket as I have had an SCT programmed of all things by a ford master tech 4 years ago or for the past lets say 65-70k on a low level daily driver and pulls a 191LTS triton so nothing much. I started the truck and she runs great no change in performance no smoke, no bubbles in my overflow tank. So im not making air in the system. I brought my pressure tester home from work and sure as you know it the over flow has a crack and starts shooting like a little boy. I start smiling thinking I found it then say shoot but how would the drops get to the other side of the truck. I go back under and there is nothing comming from the head where is mates to the block but sure enough I see what appears to be a find glimmer of fluid comming from just to the left of the passenger cyl head if looking from the back of the engine. It looks like what would appear to be the EGR. I went to the TECH page and all it has is a part number doesnt say anything about why it goes where to fix or any diagnosis. Is there coolant in that area. The valley appears to be dry. Any ideas would be great. Glad its not the head but I am saving for that day as Im sure its comming one day..:-(..SOrry its long wanted to give all the info I could...

Sure sounds like an EGR cooler hose to me. They are buried in the engine valley to the left of the oil filter housing. That would be my initial plan of attack.

From: Fort. Lauderdale FL,
I saw the pipe. Its a metel pipe heading forward and into an orange hose about 3in long into? Not really sure where that is going. Is there an o-ring in there behind the hose. I dont really see anything coolant in the valley. There was a small sheen under the hose when it was cold. But not any major amounts. After the engine was up to temp it was bone dry.Any idea on how hard it is to change the o-ring where ever it is not really sure yet?

You might try the tech section. The egr cooler hose is noted for leaking on cool down. I have read that there is a trick to changing it without yanking the top of the engine. Maybe one of the techs will chime in.

ok well i found that the orange hose right under the turbo on the egr cooler is leaking. It is a crimp style fitting on both ends and the one on the back is leaking. I just need to now get the new hose and some good clamps. But need a # for the hose, having trouble finding it. Also having trouble finding the # for the coolant overflow. any help would be great thanks.

hey no hose clamps on that hose. If you look at the front of the hose were it goes in to the oil cooler you will see a meatal ring rotate it 90 degress and it will push off the oil cooler adapter then slid it back further on to the egr cooler pipe. just go to the ford house and ask for the egr connector hose. take a look at it and it will make sence. the hose is $35-40 and is pita to do

Haven't done it, but read this on a forum (hope it helps):

You dont need to remove turbo to change the EGR cooler hose. All you need to do is cut the hose in half, take the t 30 bolts out of the oil cooler were it attaches, and remove the cover assembly. Slide old hose off and slide new one on.

Also -
  • Drain the engine coolant. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03.
  • Loosen the clamps and remove the charge air cooler (CAC) intake pipe.
  • Cut the oil cooler-to-EGR cooler hose at an angle where shown.
  • Remove the 2 bolts and the EGR cooler supply port housing cover.
  • Remove the EGR cooler supply port housing and the part of the oil cooler-to-EGR cooler hose that is still attached.
  • Twist and pull the oil cooler-to-EGR cooler hose to remove it from the EGR cooler tube.
  • Rotate the oil cooler-to-EGR cooler hose 90 degrees (1/4-turn) and remove it from the EGR cooler supply port housing.
Installation
  • Clean and inspect the EGR cooler supply port housing O-ring seals.
  • Install new O-ring seals if necessary.
  • Lubricate the inside of the new oil cooler-to-EGR cooler hose with clean engine coolant and slide it onto the EGR cooler tube far enough so it will not interfere with the installation of the EGR cooler supply port.
  • Make sure the dual index marks (flat edge) on the hose are facing up.
  • Lubricate the EGR cooler supply port housing O-ring seals with clean engine coolant and position the EGR cooler supply port on the engine.
  • NOTE: Use a commercially available Torx bit, such as Matco® BTX30B, or equivalent, and a torque adapter to tighten the EGR cooler supply port housing cover bolts.
  • Position the EGR cooler supply port housing cover and install the 2 bolts.
  • Calculate the correct torque wrench setting for the following torque. Refer to the Torque Wrench Adapter Formulas in the Appendix.
  • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  • Slide the oil cooler-to-EGR cooler hose onto the EGR cooler supply port housing and rotate it 90 degrees (1/4-turn) until it locks in place.
  • Install the CAC intake pipe and tighten the clamps.
    Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  • Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03.
