Ok, My GPR works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't, brand new by the way and I was having this same problem with the old GPR. I have an LED hooked up so I know when it is or not. Problem is, I check the large always hot and it's fine, when I check the red trigger wire, it has power when it should but the other large "powered" post doesn't have voltage. But, I can go in, turn the key off, turn it on, it might come on, might not! Never know when it's going to work. I tried grounding the orange wire and it doesn't change a thing.
I'm having a hard time believing it's the GPR. Thoughts?
Ive had this exact problem for quite a while, I think it was the junk NAPA GPRs that I was using, I went through 3 of them. I finally up-graded to a Stancor Relay about a month ago and so far so good.
Thanks, I ordered the stancor, hopefully it works. The GPR I installed was the motorcraft unit, I think I paid over $100 from Ford for it.
I don't think it's the ground because I put alligator clips on a wire and grounded it with no luck. I can't help but think it's the GPR.
Have someone turn the key while the engine is cold, so the glop plugs will come on) test the two small posts (these feed the coil on the GPR) to see if you have 12V there. The PCM sends a ground signal to the GPR in order for it to come on.
I am having the same problem with my GPR and I tested it like this to make sure that it was a GPR problem and not a signal problem from the PCM. The PCM supplies a ground signal to the PCM. The only reason I knew that my GPR was not working was because the LED that is tied to the load side of the GPR was flickering on me. I did the same and ordered a Stancor from Mouser Electronics.

Yep, tried that, got voltage.
I hope the Stancor solves this, it is getting frustrating.
Now, If I jump the 2 large posts that will get me going right?
I installed the NAPA GPR two years ago. Shortly after install it did not power the gp's so I jumped with an old screwdriver to get it started. It has not had an issue since then. I have the Stancore relay in the truck as a backup.
Well, I hate to JINX myself but it sure appears that the Stancor solved the problem. Since it was intermittant I don't know for sure, but every time I turned the key today it was good. Usually it would have definitely messed up by now.
